Many large companies require their employees to punch a time clock. Some engineering companies require their engineering level employees to keep a time sheet through out the day to assign blocks of time to be billed to various clients.
Many employees hate having to track a time sheet, and fill out status reports. Once you become self employed, you may feel like you can throw off the bonds of these restrictive and boring tasks. But are you throwing away a baby with the bath water?
Time management begins with time tracking. For the self-employed entrepreneur, tracking where their limited time is being spent is a vital activity, not a boring drudgery imposed from above.
Why should the entrepreneur keep a careful time log of their activities:
Would you be surprised to discover that a simple email to a friend might take you 25 minutes to write, and edit, and send? A detailed time log can help you discover this. You might have thought that was a 5 minute task if you don't accurately track your time. When you accurately track your time, and understand how such seeming small tasks can eat more time than you might think, then you can better prioritize which tasks you do when.
You can probably think of even more reasons why an entrepreneur should keep a detailed time log. Feel free to edit this article and add your own ideas about why you found it was important to keep a detailed time log.
