Books I'm Reading In January 2007
Finished:
- Bible - Book of James - Read the whole book, plus all the comments of the SDA commentary for the first chapter.
- CHAPTER 1 - 1 We are to rejoice under the cross, 5 to ask patience of God, 13 and in our trials not to impute our weakness, or sins, unto him, 19 but rather to hearken to the word, to meditate in it, and to do thereafter. 26 Otherwise men may seem, but never be truly religious.
- CHAPTER 2 - 1 It is not agreeable to Christian profession to regard the rich, and to despise the poor brethren: 13 rather we are to be loving, and merciful: 14 and not to boast of faith where no deeds are, 17 which is but a dead faith, 19 the faith of devils, 21 not of Abraham, 25 and Rahab.
The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony
- What Have They Done With Jesus - Beyond Strange Theories and Bad History--Why We Can Trust the Bible. By Ben Witherington. Not only covers all about what the gospels reveal about Jesus, it meticulously reviews what can be known about all of Jesus associates. It also covers the various sensational things we are presented with, and why those things, such as gnostic gospels, can not be trusted as true revelations of Jesus.
- Dr. Witherington contends that the primary source documents found in the New Testament are a much more reliable source for information on the historical Jesus than anything you will find in the gnostic Gospel of Judas or in any of the documents found in the Nag Hammadi Library. He also feels that getting close to the historical Jesus involves getting close to the people who knew Him best, and so there are chapters about Peter, Paul, his mother Mary, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, the beloved disciple (the author of the Gospel of John), and his brother James.

Working on:
- The Rice Diet - Great book on how to use a carb smart, non-protein heavy, diet to lose lots of weight permanently. Fundamentally based on an approach of a meal composed of a serving of rice + 2 servings of fruit. It advises one day a week of this very simple low sodium diet to readjust the taste buds. The rest of the days of the week build on this foundation by adding one or two additional items per meal.
- Net Words - How the internet differs from old style branding and "cram many copies of the same market speak down people's throat" approach to writing marketing copy. Why you need a different voice on the internet, and how netiquette has shaped the needed voice to be different from the old "the fantastic curves and equisite handling of the Datsun B210 make it a pleasure to drive" brochure speak.
Movies I watched in January 2007
- The Breakup - With Jennifer Anniston and Vince Vaughn - Too intense. Who wants to see Jennifer Aniston be upset, cry, and be so angry she can't forgive? What guy could be so self absorbed as not to get the hint from an incredibly patient Jennifer? The art gallery owner is fun, however Meryl Streep in the Devil Wears Prada would eat her alive. Movie is good if your life is too idyllic and you need the balance of someone else's problems, or you'd like to experience first hand what it would be like to have a total melt down with your housemate.
- Fast Food Nation - Really beats you over the head with how terrible the idea of a meat packing plant is. Where are the "No animals harmed in the making of this movie" disclaimers? Good movie if you have no clue what could be in your your fast food burger, and you like animal blood, guts, and gore, and want to watch a mysogynistic Mexican supervisor who uses his pickup truck to take free advantage of all the pretty illegal mexican immigrants who come up for the good life of $10/hr. at his meat packing plant.
- Eragon - This movie is apparently targetted at the 10 year olds, and maybe anyone else with an inferiority complex about always being underestimated. Cute scene where the 17yr. old discovers that his newly hatched dragon will be a good rat eater. Then you never get to see the thing eat again. Very disappointing. I want to see what a 20 foot tall flying creature would be eating in a day. Instead the thing seems to grow and metamorphis just by flying around. How about "Saphira discovers the stock yards of the Fast Food Nation meat packing plant"? Good if you like total unselfish telepathic dragons whose female voice would be better inside the dashboard of luxury humvee. Command: "Run over those pedestrians!" Car: "With pleasure!"
Soon to watch:
- The Penelope Cruz Superbit Pirate Theme Disk
- Captain Corell's Mandolin
- All the Pretty Horses
- Bandidas
- Masked and Anonymous
- Head in the Clouds
Couldn't watch:
- Apocalypto - The current pirate copy floating around Malaysia is too grainy to be worth spending time with. Too out of focus, something happening in the forest, that's about all that I could figure out from the first five minutes.
Jan 3, 2007
It's January 3rd, and I haven't finished any books yet... I'm slipping....
I'm visiting an internet cafe for a change. This particular place has virus infested computers. It's fun having random balloons popping up informing of problems "System Alert: Trojan-Spy.Win32@mx" and "Protection: Click this baloon to download official security software." I'm sure official software would misspell the world balloon.... You know I should probably save this post before something crashes the browser window.
