What Did Garnet Do In December 2006
Details on the
12/2006 - December is a good month, I've actually finished 3 books cover to cover!
- By Brian Sher - Great book. Don't start a business to give yourself a job. Don't start a business that just focuses on selling your time. Instead sell boxes. Even better, systematize everything so the business can run without you working "in" the business. Have an exit strategy when you start the business. Your exit is what generates cash out of thin air! Book includes several do and don't check lists with good explanations of each item.
- Seventh-day Adventist Elders Handbook - Wonderful information on the challenges and practice of being an elder in the Adventist church. Don't go to church to get a blessing, go to church to bless others, and in return, you will reap what you sow. Elders need to be encouragers and enablers of the every believer to help them discover how they are a priest with a God given calling to minister to others.
- Bringing It Back - A Message To Our Denominational Leaders on all levels - Repentance, and turning back to the authentic Adventist message. Turn around was demonstrated many times by the church of Israel, and if we have leaders who dare to do the things Godly leaders did to turn around Israel, there will be hope for our denomination. Beware of new age liberal pastors who drum out the people who call for the return to the classic unwatered down Adventist message.
Since I was enjoying my new speed reading skill so much, I decided to see how many other books I could read
during the month of December. I ended up completely reading 10 books during December 2006.
- Book Called to Be God's Leader
- Book about how God developed Joshua into a leader after the death of Moses. Includes many illustrations from the life of famous military men, presidents, Christians, missionaries, etc. Definitely worth a re-read.
- Steps To Christ - [Steps To Christ Wiki]
- While reading this book, I again was impressed by how complete the coverage is of the issues of the Christian life. Many of the pitfalls are covered, along with gently advice, and uncompromising encouragement to experience the fullness of a life committed to Christ.
- This is definitely a book worth a periodic re-reading. As I read it, I wondered what could happen to an individual who read this book once a month. It seems to me that as one goes through different experiences, different parts of this book would specially speak to the same reader.
- As I prayed about this, I was given an idea for the Steps To Christ Challenge 2007
- A 6 Day Creation Week - "Intelligent Design" - Who?
- Focuses on the Sabbath aspect of the intelligent issue, and how Satan wants us to forget the Sabbath and God's creatorship of the world so that we will be more ready to accept ideas like evolution.
- Book Punishment of Apostacy in Islam
- I bought this book because of the prominence of the discussion of apostacy in the papers in Malaysia. Muslim courts have essentially claimed that Muslims may not apostate themselves, that is, take advantage of religious to declare themselves to no longer be Muslim. Once a muslim, always a muslim, seems to be the thought.
- This book by a Pakistani jurist, does a good job of spelling out the many sides of the issue of whether or not the Islamic apostate should be put to death. While the Qur'an might not say this, this book does a good job of pointing out the questionable pedigree of the many oral traditions that Islamic scholars have based the idea that it is permissible to put the apostate to death.
- Book Islam and the Problem of Israel
- It's easy to find anti-Israel books in Malaysia, and I figured this book would give me a chuckle. The book did start out with some really wild assertions about the far reaching nefarious plans of colonialists such as Great Britain and America to do things solely to stunt Muslim progress and unity, for example, the claim that Singapore was created to be like an Israel to Malaysia, to frustrate and stunt the development of the Muslims in Malaysia. However, the book did conclude with some interesting comments on Jewishness, Zionism, and the Islamic solution based on rationalism and protection of those who are not at war with Islam.
- Well Intentioned Dragons
- Great book for pastors about how to deal with difficult people in the church. One important point is to remember to view the dragons as God's children, who are often dragons because they are hurting, ill, or frustrated. Forgiveness is also an important key for pastors, and knowing how not to internalize the conflicts in the church that they can't do anything about.
- Bible Answers
- Classic small paperback abridgment of Bible Readings For The Home.
I'm still reading:
- By Tony Buzan - Great book, took me from 340WPM to about 800WPM in just a couple of hours of study. The book claims reading speeds of 3000WPM are easily possible, and even 10,000WPM, even while improving comprehension!
- Mind Map - The Ultimate Thinking Tool by Tony Buzan
- - Great review of the unanswered questions in conventional geology that are better explained by a world wide catastrophic flood.
I also watched a lot of movies, I don't know how I managed to finish those books.....
- Happy Feet - Musical cartoon of penguins
- Devil Wears Prada - Learn from Meryl Streep why the little people deserve to be treated with disdain after you get to the top. Anne Hathaway finds herself.
- Borat - Watched at the theatre, and several times on DVD. Great ideas to have fun with people.
- Wicker Man - Learn from Nicholas Cage - Beware the beautiful dame who seems to eager to have you take her home.
- Lord of War - Another Nicholas Cage movie - This time he's a Ukrainian immigrant with a dad who is more Jewish than the Jews. Nicholas makes his mark selling a truly expendable product, guns, and the ammo for the guns.
- Titanic - Did I actually watch this yet again? Yep.
- Marine - Skip John Cena, worse dialog than any Steven Seagal movie, even worse than the Rocky movies...
- Little Man - Ho hum. Hum drum. Who could really mistake a miniaturized guy for a baby?
- Failure To Launch - Sarah Jessica Parker is awesome. What 30 something year old could resist her charms to lure him out of the parental nest.
- The Departed - A lot of blood, but well worth watching Jack Nicholson fret about the rats in his gang. And Vera Farmiga is awesome as a police psychologist being wooed by both a bright cop gone bad (in the pocket of Jack) and a no-good undercover cop in the gang trying to figure out who in the department is tipping off the gang.
- Eight Below - Touching story of the survival of a pack of sled dogs, and the quest of their handler to return to Antarctica after he is forced by a storm to leave without them.
- All The Kings Men - You might almost like Sean Penn as he plays a democrat politician promising the "people" all kinds of benefits from the pockets of rich people, and his rise to the top as "the only hick who will do something for another hick".
- Derailed - This movie with Jennifer Anniston should be used to sell high security locks. Great training on how to team fleece those who can't control their desire for a little on the side.
- Crank - Only way to avoid dying from a chinese concoction is to keep the adrenalin flowing...
- Scoop - What happens to dead journalists? Apparently they give crime tips to aspiring blond reporters like Scarlett Johansson.
- Thank You For Smoking - How to sell anyone on anything.
- Man of the Year - Would you let some voting irregularities get in the way of your winning presidential bid?
- The 40 Year Old Virgin - There is hope for anyone.
- The Illusionist - Jessica Biel likes Magicians. The police inspector somehow goes onto fairy tales and doing maintenance work for a hotel?
- Lady In The Water - How does a guy get the entire hotel he care takes participate with him in some fairy tale story about how some woman emerged from living beneath the grate in the hotel swimming pool?
Didn't finish:
- Curious George - Ever wonder how that guy with Curious George got his yellow suit and yellow sombrero? It's explained in this documentary on the life of Curious George. Very G-Rated.
On my list to watch:
- Inside Man
- A Prairie Home Companion
- Hollow Man 2
- Deck the Halls
