• Pictures On Wikis
  • Basic picture posting on wikis
    
    • Two ways to post a picture:
      • Just put the URL of the picture. If it ends in .jpg or .gif, the picture will be placed in line at that spot. For example

• Another reason to escape to HTML is to use some of the extra attributes that are available for the IMG tag. For example, you might want to set the picture width to 100 pixels. Here is how:

• Where to store your pictures on the internet so they can show up on wiki pages
  • If you link to pictures from other websites, you don't have to worry about storing the picture, since someone else is already storing the picture on the net. This is called 'hot-linking', and is sometimes frowned upon. Even if the site containing the pictures doesn't mind you linking the pictures into your own website, if they change the location of their pictures, or go offline, you'll be left with broken images on your wiki pages. So it's probably better to store your own copy of the pictures. OF course, grabbing someone else's pictures and putting them on your own website can also raise copyright issues.

• Most wikis do not allow pictures to be stores in the wiki. So if you want to put pictures on your wiki pages, you may have to get some kind of simple FTP type hosting account where you can use FTP to put your pictures on a server, so that those pictures can have a URL on the web.

• For wikis on Web Mill servers, FrontPage (Search for FrontPage) extensions are available. You can use FrontPage (Search for FrontPage) extensions to create a group of subdirectories where you can store your pictures using FrontPage (Search). You then get the URL for the pictures, and use those URLs in your wiki pages so that the pictures appear in the wiki.

• Using FrontPage (Search) to install pictures on a Web Mill Wiki, and link to the pictures from a wiki page.

• First you need to have a FrontPage (Search) login on the wiki. Ask the administrator of the wiki to set this up for you. If it is your own wiki or website, you will have been given this information when you signed up.
  • To add a new user to have Front Page access to your site, log into your site with FrontPage (Search), then select Tools -> Server -> Administration home. Log in, then use Add Users on the website to add the username and password for a new user.

• If the wiki website does not already have it, create a main subdirectory to contain all your pictures. For example Picture_Gallery. Here are the steps to set this up:
  • After opening the website, right click on the root of the Folder List
  • From the popup menu select New -> Folder
  • Type in the name Picture_Gallery for the folder. Then press enter to save it.
  • You might briefly see a dialog box telling you that the folder is being created.

• If there is not already a suitable subdirectory within the Picture_Gallery folder for your picture, then create a new subdirectry to contain them. The process is very similar to the above, except that you right click on the Picture_Gallery folder and create the new folder under that.
  • Note that you can have several levels of nested folders within the Picture_Gallery. You might set up a hierarchy tree that has Animals, and then within that a folder for Birds, and within that a folder for Parrots.

• Now select the directory where you want to place a picture. Do this by left clicking (a normal click) on the folder in the folder list. You might see a brief message that FrontPage (Search for FrontPage) is retrieving the file list for the folder. You'll then see all the files that are already in that folder.

• You can either upload pictures from your hard drive, or you can cut and paste, or drag and drop, pictures from other webpages.

• How to drag and drop pictures from other websites
  • Resize the frontpage window so that you can still see it, but so that you also have room on your screen to display a web browser.
  • Open a web browser, and navigate to a page that has a picture that you want.
    • One way to find reusable pictures is to search for "topic" picture site:gov on Google. This will cause it to look only on government websites for a picture about the given topic.
    • Another way to find a good picture is to look on Amazon.com for a book cover of a book on the topic. Go to Amazon and search for your topic, and then use the Amazon linking commands to include that book on your wiki page.
  • Once you've found a suitable picture, you can click and drag it into your FrontPage (Search) folder. For example, you could practice with the fire fly pictures on this page: http://hotaru.homepage.jpg/
    • Do this by left clicking the picture, then without letting up on the mouse, drag the cursor over to the frontpage window that shows the contents of your folder. Let go of the cursor there, and you'll have the picture copied onto your website
  • Rename the picture after it is on your website to a more appropriate name. You can do this by right clicking the file in FrontPage (Search), and select Rename from the popup menu. When renaming the picture, be sure to keep the same extension. Don't change a picture.gif file to be newname.jpg.
  • Lets say you dragged the picture fireflyongrass.jpg and placed it in a directory Picture_Gallery/insects/firefly/fireflyongrass.jpg. You can easily link to it just by giving the complete URL of the picture, like this:

• How to use pictures from your own hard drive
  • First, what pictures are appropriate for posting on the web
    • Pictures for websites must be an appropriate size. There are two sizes that matter: The number of bytes of the picture, and the horizontal and vertical pixels, (pixel size) of the picture.
    • Pictures directly from your scanner should probably not be placed directly online unless you want people to be able to download something that they can print at very high resolution. Pictures produced on a scanner are normally at a very high DPI, and can be very large files, in the range of 1 or more megabytes in size.
    • Pictures produced directly from your multi-mega-pixel camera are probably also not suitable for direct posting. The pixel size of most cameras vastly exceeds the size of most people's screens.
    • If you want to post raw camera or scanner pictures, they should be posted as some kind of download area. They should probably not be directly embeded in web pages.
    • Rules of thumb for pixel sizes:
      • Most people's computer monitors are set to 800 x 600 pixels, sometimes 1024x768. That means the typical four mega pixel camera picture, at approximately 2560x1800 pixels is about four times the average screen.
        • If you'd like a picture that takes up about half the width of the average display, make it 350 pixels wide. Have the height proportionally adjusted. Because you have so few pixels to work with, it might be a good idea to tightly crop the original before you resize it for the web. Be sure to save the cropped and resized version to a different file name than the original so you can redo the cropping and resizing at a later time.
      • Most pictures embbedded in a web page should not have a file size larger than 48K. An entire web page, HTML, and all graphics combined, should probably not be larger than 256K in total. Many people are still browsing the web on dialup connections, and a webpage that was 256K in size, including it's graphics, might take 6 or 7 seconds to be fully displayed.
      • When making pages in frontpage, at the bottom of the frontpage window in the status bar, it will give you an estimate of how long it will take the average user to display the webpage, based on the total size of all the graphics in the page and the HTML code of the page.

• Pictures should be resized before placing on the web. A tool like Grapic Workshop Pro can be used to resize entire batches of photos.
• It can be very handy to use Graphic Workshop Pro to produce a series of 100 pixel wide thumbnail copies of your pictures.
• FrontPage (Search for FrontPage) can also be used to resize the pictures. If you use FrontPage (Search for FrontPage) to resize pictures, be prepared for the upload of the picture to take some time if the picture is very large.

• Once you have a properly sized picture, you can use drag and drop to copy the picture from your hard drive into frontpage
  • Open the website in frontpage
  • Select a folder within the Picture_Gallery folder to place your picture in. Create the sub-folder if it doesn't already exist.
  • Use cut and paste from windows file explorer to select files on your hard drive, select Edit -> Copy, then go to Front Page and say Edit -> Paste. This will paste the pictures into frontpage.
  • Or use drag and drop between side by side windows of FrontPage (Search) and Windows File Explorer.
