Assignment 2A: Build A Mini Site For A Book, Following An Example
Here is an example of a mini site for a specific book: Seventh-Day Adventist Elders Handbook Study Guide .
Things to take note of:
- Study especially the table of contents and how it links to chapters, and sections, and how sections link to other sections in the same chapter, and chapters link to other chapters, and the hierarchy of pages.
- Use the "Edit" link on each page to look at the actually wiki text for each page.
- Notice how the pages are named within this group:
- Notice that I named the sub chapter pages with the prefix of the title of the main page.
- This is so the "Index" listing will show all these pages grouped together.
- This also takes generic chapter titles like "Conclusion" and gives them a more unique name, so it makes sure you dont have a page just called "Conclusion" for this book, and later run into a naming conflict where you want a page for that book named Conclusion.
- By prepending the title of the book within the page name, you make sure that you can create unique named pages for all the books you might want to place on a given wiki....
- Also notice this is setup like a tree branching out from the table of contents page, with several major branches, one for each chapter. Try to emulate this for your history book.....
Assignment: For a book of your choice, such as a history book, or science book, create a main table of contents page that links to subpages for chapters, and even sections within chapters. Create the pages for each chapter, and sections, and develop hierarchical links between the pages, i.e. lower pages like sections link upward to the chapters they are in, and the chapters link upwards to the table of contents. Specific sections might have forward / next links to other sections.
Goal: Create at least a 20 page mini site that at least 3 levels of pages (Table Of Contents / Chapters / Sections)
Assignment 2B: Practice Refactoring
For these refactoring assignments, do not remove your original page that you put online. Instead, create a new page, with a new title, to practice refactoring the content from the original page into a group of pages. You can make a link from your original page to the new page (and vice versa), to show what the same content looks like when it is refactored.
- Assignment 2B-1: The Thai Border Problems Fact Sheet as main page, plus sub page for each fact. Main page should have very short summary for each fact.
- Assignment 2B-2: Refactor the How To Review A Book Article
Assignment Goal: Learning to see content as a mini web group of interlinked narrowly topic focused webpages.
Extra credit
After you refactor the Thai facts into one fact per page, try to find some other web pages (using Google or other search engine) that are narrowly focused on the topic of each fact. Add the URLs for each of this pages, along with a short summary of each page, to each individual fact page on the wiki. To accomplish this, you need to think how to structure some google queries that will find pages narrowly related to the content of each fact. On each fact page, create a list of the google queries that you tried that gave good results related to the content of each fact.
Please study the example below of how this has been done for the first fact from the Thai border problem article. Only one google query is shown here, but you should be able to come up with two to five google queries for each fact. Pick one to three of the best links from each query to include in the list of related web pages.
Things to notice:
- Notice that the first link had a really long URL, with a space in it as shown on Google. That space needed to be deleted when the URL was put on the wiki. Additionally since the URL is so long, it's been wrapped in a set of single brackets, and a shorter two or three words for the text link have been included after the pipe symbol
- Notice that the second related link below is a link to a book on Amazon.com. Instead of linking to the Thompson site we found in the third link from Google, we instead just link directly over to Amazon using the ISBNTEXT wiki text command. By using the ISBNTEXT command, we can make a commission from anyone who clicks from this page over to Amazon to see more information about the book. ISBNPICM has been used to include a picture of the cover of the book on this page. The Instructions (Search for Instructions) page HowToLinkToAmazon (Search for HowToLinkToAmazon) has more information about these special wiki commands for linking to Amazon.
- The FloatR?Create|Search tags around the ISBNPICM cause the book picture to float to the right side of the page, and the web text to flow around it.
- Notice the table of contents was added as a second level to the outline, to give more details about the book. This was done especially since the contents included a chapter title that matched our query. The table of contents overall shows how well connected this book is with our overall topic. You might want to feature this book on your main facts page that links to the individual facts pages.
- Notice that the fourth link, to a DOC file, has been included as a wiki page on this wiki. The wiki page was made by cutting and pasting from the "View as HTML" for the sixth result on google.
- This page uses HTML escape to create a table, and to embed a copy of the google results that were used to create this example (you can use edit to look at the wiki text for this page to see how wiki text and HTML can be intermixed on the same page.)
Assignment goal: You'll notice that completing this for each fact makes each fact, even the short first fact, into a very meaty authoritative page related to that fact. When you complete this extra credit, you'll be well on your way to learning how to flesh out content for almost any topic.
Here is an example for the first fact:
