Just received this email:
Subject: Don't let Bush get us into a war with Iran!
Hi, I just signed a petition to ask Congress to demand President Bush seek congressional authorization before considering military action in Iran. He seems out of control, and we have to stop the war in Iraq from escalating into a regional crisis. Congress can do this, but they need to hear from us. Can you sign?

Petition of the week! I appreciate it when my friends keep me in the loop on these things. Here are few questions I sent back to my friend:
Just curious…. “let UN sanctions against Iran work”…. Are we talking about
Or, as the petition states, have “congress reign in Bush”. Let's see, is that the same congress that in general voted to support the most recent entry into Iraq? (“They were lied to by Bush about WMD…..” Yeah, or according to several sources, there was too much advance notice that photos show that Saddam had ample time to evacuate his WMD to Syria….)
In regards to the odds of diplomacy making any real progress: It’s fairly well known that most of the radical Muslims see truce (hudna) as a temporary thing to give them a break from their enemies pressures, and allow the Muslims time to rearm and restrengthen, the hudna can be broken when most advantageous to themselves. Some Arabic commentators say this is a misconstruction of the concept, but they admit that the more radical Muslims do construe in this way….. I’ve been studying the writings of Arab scholars about issues such as how they view apostacy, and found that while there are scholars who claim the Qu’ran itself doesn’t pronounce death upon the individual who turns away from Islam, there are a considerable number of haddiths (or traditional sayings of secondary importance to the Qu’ran), that do command death to those who turn away from Islam to some other religion. Because of the haddiths (some of questionable pedigree according to the scholars), there is considerable debate within Islam about whether the death penalty should be immediate, whether three days should be allowed for reconsideration to return to Islam, whether it replies to women as well as men, whether it applies to converts to Islams the same as those born into Islam. There are scholars to go to who support just about any combination of answers to those questions. But even the most conservative scholar agrees that jailing an apostate and applying considerable influence, (short of torture), that results in the individual turning back to Islam is justified by the final result! In other words, there is so much tradition draped over the Qu’ran that almost any radical position can be supported. As long as the radicals insist on supporting militant interpretations, they will be able to sway the common people with the hatred necessary to continue their violence.
While some Muslim writings try to say that Islamic nations have been kinder to the Jewish people than the west have been, (and that Zionists encouraged western countries to be cruel to Jews in order to increase Jewish immigration to Israel when there wasn’t enough immigration without Zionist organized persecution), it’s well known that Muslims have done a very poor job of respecting the religious shrines of other religions, or even the religious shrines of other Muslims! In any event, all Islamic sources are clear that Islam is not just a religion but it is also a national government, and it is not content in any case to take a second seat to other religions or forms of rule, it must be primary, and it will allow the others to exist as long as they don’t threat the Islamic religion or the Islamic state. Even the Muslim individual who was invited to give an Arabic prayer before Congress was found a year later to be advocating overthrow of the U.S. constitution and establishment of suriah courts here (the ones that advocate chopping off of extremities), and the first U.S. caliphate.
When you have Ahmed “I’m-a-dinner-jacket” of Iran denying the holocaust, claiming he wants to wipe Israel off the map, and various other way out things, and even being called extreme by the religious radicals in his country, we would do well not to underestimate his stated intentions. Be very careful of any of his pacifist language to the west that may be very different than what he is saying to the Arabic world.
A’la Borat, in regards to my opening questions: ………. NOT!
