- To write about the creation of the world is a hopeless task in view of the wonderful language of the first chapter of the Bible. It tells that the earth was formless, empty and dark. How shall a man picture darkness? The artist in representing something must depend on actualities of form. We can imagine that the Divine Being had no need of something to stand on, but the invisible God could not be pictured unless He be like a man standing on something material. we wsee in the picture the shape of the globe without mountains, rivers, or seas. The clouds are cleverly pictured in straight lines below and rolling forms above. On this cloud mass stands a figure whose draperies suggest wind, as if the air were alredy stirring. With uplifted hands he commands the light to burst forth. It is not yet the sun, but it does suggest light. -- James W. Pattison
