The First Submarines

The Submarine 1578-1919

Back to Garnet's Submarine Books (Search)

by Antony Preston and John Batchelor, 64 pages, part of the History of the World Wars Special.

About This Book

The idea of underwater travel has always fascinated men, as much as that of flight, and the first recorded design for an underwater vessel occurs in 1578. But it was only after centuries of experiments that the submarine became a practical and a lethal weapon, with the invention of the torpedo and the development of the battery-powered electric motor in the latter part of the 19th century.

In this book we trace the history of the submarine from its earliest beginnings, the man-powered craft with primitive armament which were often more dangerous for their crews than for their targets. Of course, it was during the First World War that the submarine came into its own. In this combination of Antony Preston's authoritative and readable text with John Bachelor's magnificent illustrations, we follow the development of the submarine up to 1919, when it had almost succeeded in defeating the entire naval might of the British Empire.

About The Authors

Antony Preston was born in 1938 and educated in South Africa. He worked for some time as a research assistant in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. He has written numerous reviews and articles on warship design and aspects of 19th and 20th century naval history for various journals and periodicals. Among his books are Send a Gunboat (with John Major), V & W Destroyers, and Battleships of World War 1.

John Batchelor, after serving in the RAF, worked for three British aircraft firms in their technical publications departments. He then contributed on a freelance basis to many technical magazines, as well as the boys' magazine Eagle, before starting what was to be a marathon task of over 1,000 illustrations for Purnell's Histories of the Second World War and First World War. He takes every opportunity to fly or sail in, shoot with, or climb over and photograph any piece of military equipment he can find.
