Spelling
Good for those hard working Indian kids.
Too many American kids are distracted with other things not as important. They take education for granted but in places like Sri Lanka and India, etc.... Education means progress and a better life.
American children who are homeschooled are much better off than ones in public schools. American public schools are worst quality because of influences by NEA, a union of very lefty liberal ideas who are most interested in teaching and pushing social dysfunctions like homosexuality and other self-destructive ideas to American kids. Reading, Writing and Arithmatic is almost nonexistent in importance anymore.
Agreed.
However, some of the "home-schooled" kids that compete in these competitions are quite the freaks themselves.
...they should give him a special prize just for spelling his own name correctly.

while the caste system remains firmly entrenched.
Back in elementary school, there was this girl who won the spelling bee champion like this kid. One day, I asked her to spell Crayola and she couldn't. I stumped the spelling be champ. From then on, she carried the name "Thao Crayola" until we finished elementary school.
But she could probably call you any other name she wanted since you couldn't beat her, I'm sure she knew many words that you couldn't spell.
You should watch the documentary "Spellbound." It follows a half dozen kids as they go through the prep and then the contest.
I'm not sure about the work ethic stuff. Most of those kids who enter that competition are literally consumed with learning spelling. They have no hobbies, no life after schoool, etc. They have private coaches, spelling software, special lessons, etc. It's like the kids training for the olympic teams.
Anyway, it's a good watch. It shows the personality quirks for these kids and their parents. A lot of them are pushed by their families who think getting a high finish shows their worth.
Although spelling was my best subject at school, I do envy Japanese people on this point. Spelling in English is a hodge-podge of exceptions and rules based on other languages. I think studying Kanji and the pictorial meaning behind them must be so much more useful to the brain in those developing years.
I wonder if they guy spelling 'appoggiatura' could use it in a sentence? The funny thing is, I studied music and I can tell you that no-one uses this word. It's a 'grace-note'. Absolutely no-one, at any level, ever uses the word 'appoggiatura'. Sort of makes you wonder ;-)
poor girl - your so hobbesian
Don't be blinded by the ethnic reflection.
London still has the world beat for judging you by what comes out of your mouth instead of your wallet.
Most of the world still uses visual stereotypes like a dog uses its nose. A lot of times you end up sleeping in your own filth.
