Often spammers want to track the effectiveness of their emails. Not only do they want to track the responses to their emails, they also want to track how many times their emails are opened.
One way to do that is with invisible images inserted into the email. These invisible images are called various names such as "invisible GIF" or "web beacon." These are not sent with the email, but are instead stored on a server. When the recipient opens the email, the email program will request this picture from a web server during the process of displaying the message. This request to the webserver causes the spammer to be alerted that your address is "live."
With these invisible images, it is sometimes possible for a spammer to see not only when you open your email, but when you forward the email to others.
Remember: Just don't open email messages that look like spam.
Many online email services offer buttons or links that can be used to report a message as spam without opening it. By using these links, message will be deleted and reported as spam.
Some online email services, and email clients such as the latest versions of Microsoft Outlook have an Image Blocking feature that prevents HTML graphics from loading until you determine the message is from a trusted sender.
