How To Avoid Common Spammer Tricks
Subjects > ... > Internet > Internet Culture Discussion > Common Spammer Tricks And Tips To Avoid Them
There are some changes to your email accounts that can help to block spam. Many of the free emails such as Yahoo, and others, have special spam blocking features that can be enabled. Here are some additional spam-fighting tips:
- Treat your email address like your phone number! Protect it! Some free email services offer extra futures to their paying customers, like 'Yahoo Mail! AddressGuard?Create™', which available only to their Yahoo! Mail Plus customers).
- Use spam-fighting tools at the email service.
- No reputable company will ask for your password, credit card numbers, or other personal information in an email.
- Keep your email address out of public places, such as chat rooms, web pages, newsgroups, and message boards, where spammers can harvest email addresses.
- Use disposable email addresses when posting online. Some online email services only make these available to their paying customers.
- Never respond to any unsolicited email. It encourages the spammers, and worse yet, this can alert the sender that your email address is valid, resulting in an increase in spam.
- Never click on a URL or web site listed in spam since this will often verify your email address. Additionally, URLs in many emails are not what they seem. In HTML formatted email, often spammers will put text that looks like a URL, but actually links to somewhere entirely different.
- Don't get involved in spam chain letters. The vast majority of chain letter "pleas for help", or "advisories from officials" are hoaxes or urban legends. Delete them, don't forward them. If one of your friends send these chain letters to you, politely reply only to your friend, and ask them to visit a spam prevention resource like this one and learn how now to help spread spam.
