How To Avoid Common Spammer Tricks

Subjects > ... > Internet > Internet Culture Discussion > Common Spammer Tricks And Tips To Avoid Them

One of the things that spammers hope to find is people who aren't aware of their techniques, so that they can send emails that actually get read. Often new users to the internet aren't sophisticated enough to have used their emails in a lot of publicly accessible places.

One way that spammers can find their email addresses is by trying lots of random addresses. One way to do this is by taking a "dictionary" of common words and names, and combining them. The spammer then sends email addressed to all different variations such as johndoe1@anisp.com, johndoe2@anisp.com, johndoe3@anisp.com.

Spammers typically do this at leading email providers that have a large base of users. Many email providers have extra services that help identify and prevent attacks such as dictionary attacks.
