Sony Prevents Upgrade Of XP Home Machines To XP Professional
Subjects > Computers (Search for Computers) > Software (Search)
All Sony Laptops that ship with "Media Recovery Wizard" and Microsoft XP Home have been setup to not allow an upgrade to Windows XP Professional.
- At 34 minutes left to go on the upgrade to XP Professional, after it's first reboot, it is "installing devices". The green progress bar is about 75% across when the crash happens.
- Just before the crash each of the following commercials are displayed:
- explore your creative side with photos and videos
- music and entertainment just got better
- windows movie maker makes it easy and fun to caputre, create, and share home movies.
- It is during the last commercial, that a blue screen happens, and the following error message will be displayed for about 1 or 2 seconds:
DEVICE_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
A Sony tech support representative confirmed this is a known issue with all Sony machines that have shipped with their "Media Recovery Wizard", Sony's scheme to ship machines that have no recovery disks.
Apparently this issue has been known at least since the middle of 2003.
NOTE:
Sony recently sent this email of a possible solution to this problem. I have not tried this procedure. Essentially they seem to recommending to copy the Windows XP Pro CD to the hard drive of the computer, and then do the install from there, but please read their message for the exact details.
