Shortwave Numbers Stations
See also Art Bell Show ...
Ever hear a shortwave station that is just announcing numbers in random sequences, often in groups of five? These are spy broadcasts to agents in the field. These are encrypted communications. The codes are written down by the spy, and then the numbers are subtracted from a key, and then the results are decoded according to another key. By using ever changing keys, this information is difficult to decode.

Why is shortwave radio interesting, from interview of Harry Helms by Art Bell:
- When everything else fails, shortwave still gets through. It is a safety net for people who want to have access to the world, at a remarkably low price.
- If you like a sense of adventure, finding these unusual stations, like these numbers stations, or pirate radio stations, gives shortwave radio monitoring a sense of adventure, and makes it compelling.
