Eight rules for effective preaching:
Preaching is overflowing from a full cup. Elders must fill their own cup to be effective at preaching. It is easy to speak about Jesus when you are filled with him.
Paul's exhortation: "Preach the word!" 2 Tim 4:2
Sermons need to be Bible-centered and Christ-centered.
Let the Bible speak for itself on your topic.
Avoid private interpretations of Scripture and speculative truth.
"There are a thousand temptations in disguise prepared for thopse who have the light of truth; and the only safety for any of us is in receiving no new doctrine, no new intrepretation of Scriptures, without first submitting it to brethren of experience. Lay it before them in a humble teachable spirit, with earnest prayer; and if they see no light in it, yield to their judgement; for in the multitude of counselors there is safety." (Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 293)
The message of the Bible is relevant for all time. Preaching should show how themes like salvation still apply today. For a text, read the practical applications given in Bible commentaries, Ellen White's commentaries and other Christian authors.
Things that making preaching relevant: Current events, nature, life experiences
Make your preaching hope centered, even when speaking about sin. Do this by focusing on the "good news" of the gospel.
Begin preparing sermons early so that the scriptures and ideas can "soak into mind." Early preparation saves time, eases pressure and increases creativity by giving time for the sermon ideas to "percolate" in your mind, and for you to find practical life applications in your everyday life.
Three main parts of logical organization:
Introduction should be the one sentence principle theme of your sermon.
In the body state each point or lesson, prove them biblically, and give practical applications or illustration of each.
In conclusion, summarize main points and the theme.
Christ centered preaching leads the listeners to make a personal decision for Christ.
"So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and hel;ped them to understand the reading" Neh 8:8
"The culture and right use of the voice are greatly neglected... There are many who read and speak in so low a manner that they cannot be readily understood. Some have a thick, indistinct utterance, others speak in a igh key, in sharp, shrill tones that are painful to the hearers... By diligent effort all may acquire the power to read intelligibly, and speak in a full, clear, round tone, in a distinct and impressive manner. By doing this we may greatly increase our efficiency as workers for Christ." (Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 335-336)
Look at sermons preached in the last year to find those over and under emphasized, and then plan, according to current events and the needs of the congregation, the topics and passages for the next year's preaching.
Goal of Yearly planning of preaching: Balance, and complete presentation of the gospel
