Seven easy words
- 1. Prepare
- 2. Befriend
- 3. Read
- 4. Ask
- 5. Pray
- 6. Leave
- 7. Write
1. Prepare
Elder should prepare their heart before visiting. Prepare a scripture to share in the home.
Ideas:
2. Befriend
Be social, include non-members if they want. Encourage them to talk about their interests, and listen attentively.
3. Read
After a few minutes, move the conversation in a spiritual direction, perhaps including a reading from a pocket Bible.
Don't sermonize on the Bible reading.
4. Ask
Ask for their prayer request. The focus is loving concern for their problems, not so much to give instant answers.
5. Pray
Kneel if possible. Invite others, and pray specially for the requests just made. Try to have every name memorized at this point.
Remember to pray for a blessing on the home.
6. Leave
Leave after the prayer. 30 minutes is a good goal for the total length of the visit.
7. Write
Write down details:
- Date and time of visit
- Names of people there, and family members not there
- Make note of children
- Special requests
These notes are important for followups in the future.
