Purpose of Ordination
Page 41
Elder ordination recognizes:
- Call by God to this ministry
- God's spiritual gifts enabling the person to perform this ministry
- Congregation recognizing and approving God's call
- Congregation expressing willingness to follow the individual's leadership
Prerequisites To Ordination
- Call by God
- Election by local church
- Self-examination by the ordinand
Adventist commitment is basically for one year. They must be elected and ordained, and these things should happen nearly concurrently.
The ordination service
Sacred, special, and simple, performed by ordained minister, preferably of the local congregation, in the presence of the congregation.
Authority Granted
It is not done to grant status or an elevated position.
Elders recognized as principal leaders in local church.
- Officiate at communion
- Lead out in funeral service
- Request conference to arrange a minister for baptism, unless elders are specially authorized
- May not perform marriage service, but may assist
Ordination meant to be permanent unless elder disqualifies themselve through apostacy, or improper behaviour.
Authority Limited
Page 43
Only function as elders as long as elected by the local church. They work is local church centered:
- Only elected by local church, never by the conference or mission
- Local pastor ordains them
- Ordained in presence of local congregation
- Authorized only to serve in the church that elects them
Obligations limited by pastor, church board, and church business meetings. They are assistants to the pastor, and always work under his guidance. Major problems to be discussed with pastor and church board.
Acceptance and dismissal of members is not made by elders, but by the church as a whole.
