President Bush Weekly Radio Address May 1 2004Notes about his speech....
One year ago I announced the end of the hostilities in Iraq.
One year later despite many challenges, life for the Iraqi people is a world away from the life under Sadaam Hussein.
Their daily life is improving. Electricity is more widely available.
Iraq has a stable currency and solid banks.
Schools and clinics are renovated and openly available.
Iraqi oil industry already producing about 2.5 million barrels a day.
Illegal militias are trying to take power by force that they could never gain through the ballot.
First we will assure an atmosphere of security.
Negotiate the disarmament of the radicals in fallujah.
American and coalition forces are in place and we are prepared to restore order in Iraq.
Like many proud people, Iraqi's want to manage their own affairs, and we support that.
Iraqi's will assume all administrative duties being currently handled by the coalition.
As the transfer of sovereignty on june 30 gets closer, we will likely see more violence by those opposed.
We will finish our work in Iraq because the stakes for our country and the world are high. Failure would extinguish the hopes of millions in the middle east.
Democracy will succeed in Iraq because the people in Iraq desire to live in freedom.
