In another message thread, I reported the following bug:
One of the developers of Pocket Informant 5 (akac) responded:
If the default display mode of the hx4705 is what he is refering to as "HighDPI?Create" mode, that's actually a mode that puzzles many people. There is discussion on other websites about why did Microsoft choose to use the screen so poorly by mostly emulating the amount of information that older Pocket PC's can display. Granted, when the hx4705 is used with a program like SE_VGA, the printing can be really tiny, and things can be hard to click on, it might turn off a lot of users. But for those of us who are motivated, and have the eye sight and dexterity good enough to use the SE_VGA mode, I'd much prefer to run my palmtop in that mode. The extra amount of text I can see is more than worth the sacrifice of not seeing the text without a lot of extra pixels being spent "smoothing" the characters.
In another message, "X50v and Big Icons", (akac) commented:
Unfortunately no link was provided to the QVGA PI Resources. As soon as I have the chance to find out what this is, and how to do this, I'll include some notes here about whether it is worth doing.
The developers have refered to problems with screen buffering in VGA mode because of the added pixels. On VGA its 4 times larger than on QVGA. Many programs such as Pocket Informant make use of the technique of screen buffering to improve drawing speed. With a screen buffer the application only needs to repaint the changed pixels rather than the entire screen. However according to akac, it can take up 600k of RAM per view or so on a VGA device. Since Pocket Informant uses several different views, it would be possible to eat up as much as 6MB of ram for screen buffering on a VGA sized screen.

Regarding VGA (not Windows Second Edition), Akac said: "We don't really support VGA non SE anymore. The code paths for the two are so different and work for one totaly negates another - and because its really a hack - we just can't support it."
