On this thread http://www.pocketinformant.com/Forums/index.php?showtopic=5685&st=0&p=29939& someone posted that they really enjoy using the VGA mode on their x50v PPC palmtop, and they wanted to know how to make Pocket Informant 5 work with their palmtop.
Unfortunately the response from Web IS to this message, (and other similar messages), is we don't officially support SE_VGA.
I wrote this response to that user:
I agree, the SE_VGA mode is beautiful. Programs like Resco File Explorer handle the SE_VGA wonderfully. And even the built in Microsoft PIM Apps handle SE_VGA properly.
According to akac, as for PI and SE_VGA:
akac [wants to see a screen shot] so everyone can see how terrible PI 5 looks with SE_VGA. Maybe someone knows how to quickly do this?
To check out wither the built in Microsoft PIM apps handle SE_VGA mode properly, I finally figured out [[Pocket Informant 5 - How To Access Microsoft PIM Apps After PI 5 Has Taken Over Machine|How To Get Back To Original Microsoft PIM Apps After PI5 Takes Over Your PDA]. The built in Microsoft PIM Apps had no problem with SE_VGA.
I'm pretty disappointed about this lack of support of SE_VGA, and the cavalier WIS attitude about the complaints so far. Most other apps I really need regularly like Excel, Messenging, Programs Browser, Microsoft Tasks (including the date chooser) all support the SE_VGA without any problems. Pocket Informant 5.5 lack of support is the one thing holding me back from being able to regularly use my palmtop in SE_VGA mode.
IMNHO, this clearly a problem of PI 5 not properly using the system metrics calls that other apps are properly using. The only other apps I've found that dont get SE_VGA right are usually shareware, freeware, or other single author productions. However many of them, written before these newer PPC with VGA screens came out, seem to do just fine.
Even my own very simple .NET apps are supporting SE_VGA without any extra effort. Or in other words, someone made some bad choices in the design of the PI display code, unapproved by microsoft's architecture advice, and it's biting them now that new machines with other screen factors are coming out.
