Pirate Software Vendors Disappear From Kuala Lumpur Malaysias Imbe Plaza
I’ve been going for long walks in the city, as well as using the public transit periodically…. One of my favorite destinations is Imbe Plaza, across from Times Square, the 10 story mall that has a roller coaster inside the mall. It’s great fun to shop for trinkets while people fly over your head going “aaayeeeee…..”
Unfortunately the pirate software venders at Imbe got tightly squeezed a couple of weeks ago. There was plenty when I first arrived, but now it is all gone. Imagine my favorite plaza, the three story Imbe Plaza, where 50% of the stalls were pirate software, now shuttered, or pretending to sell PC speakers while they see if you want to furtively look at their secret hand printed list of games they can still get for you…. There is a much more glitzy 5 or 6 story mall next door with lots of hand phone sellers, jewelry shops, clothing stores, and lots of me-too laptop and electronics sellers. It only apparently had a couple of pirate vendors who have disappeared, so they aren’t so conspicuously absent….. The sellers in Imbe had initially thought they could come back with their wares in a couple of weeks, but now they aren’t so sure. I gave them my condolescences, then made sure I patronized the curry puff and soft drinks uncle who has a little concession in the now empty Imbe…. I can’t figure out why after ten years of flourishing, they are now getting so much pressure. Must be that we’ve finally exported some kind of critical mass of lawyers to Malaysia.
