Ophthalmic Migraines are the result of a vasospasm, a spasm of arteries behind the eye, resulting in blood flow being shut off to the optic nerve.
Comments about Ophthalmic migraines from sufferers:
- I have also experienced one ophthalmic/ocular migraine, which was all the symptoms of a migraine (flashing lights, light sensitivity) without the headache.
- an ophthalmic migraine or an atypical migraine. Most TIAs etc are without headache.
- I suffered from my first "ophthalmic" migraine, as my doctor called it, in college. I was in the cafeteria and the left side of everyone's faces looked
- I've had a minor problem with ophthalmic migraine since my mid 20s. That's when you get the scotoma (flashing, expanding lights effect) but without getting a migraine headache with it. These events would just leave me a bit disoriented and irritated because it interferes with my vision for about 20 minutes. I have it irregularly a few times a year at most, often associated with stressful times, but it does not occur during all times of stress.
- I have an ophthalmic migraine which lasts for about 30 minutes, every four to six months.
- I see strange objects like translucent cells or strands and darting pulses/dots I had that one time.. I saw flies but everytime I would look at them they quickly darted away. It was confusing since the fly would disappear into nothing and I didn't know where it had gone
Visual migraines are not sinus headaches. In fact, 90% of sinus headaches are migraines. You only truly have a sinus headache if you have a sinus infection.
Phytoestrogens exacerbate ophthalmic migraine.
High blood pressure can also cause these effects, so get your blood pressure checked.
People who see flashes of lights that appear as jaggaed lines or “heat waves” lasting 10-20 minutes, may be caused by a spasm of blood vessels in the brain, called migraines. If a headache follows the flashes, it is called a migraine headache. Sometimes these symptoms may occur with or without a ophthalmic migraine.
Shamans create a first stage of a trance that is typically reported is the experience of "entoptic phenomena" which I believe to be a kind of self-induced migraine, but I've never been able to find anymore infomation on this.
- They report luminous shapes and incandescent patterns very much like what you described. I found Bystander's post very interesting because one of the things that some shamans will do to prepare for a trancing ceremony is to deprive themselves of sleep. It's amazing what our bodies and mind are capable of. According to the link I gave "The cause is due to a temporary spasm in the blood vessels behind the eye called "vasospasm" similar to a spasm or cramp that you may have once experienced in one of your leg muscles (Charlie-Horse)." I guess it would not be that hard to induce? Or maybe shamans were more prone to this sort of thing?
Sources:
- Ophthalmic migraine is quite common. Patients usually experience visual symptoms of seeing bright zig-zag type lines in their central or peripheral (side) vision. These bright lines may have associated flashing light sensations and sometimes can interfere with vision. There are many variations of symptoms. These symptoms usually resolve spontaneously after several minutes but usually less than one hour. Often, rest in a darkened room can be helpful during a migraine attack. Medical treatment is usually not necessary.
- Sometimes, there can be a headache after the visual symptoms resolve. This is called migraine headache with visual prodrome. Some people get migraine headaches without the visual symptoms. Some people get the visual symptoms without the headache. This is called Ophthalmic Migraine. The cause is due to a temporary spasm in the blood vessels behind the eye called "vasospasm" similar to a spasm or cramp that you may have once experienced in one of your leg muscles (Charlie-Horse).
