February 25, 2004: OnlineNIC (Search for OnlineNIC) Who Is database (WhoIs?Create|Search) has been down now for several days. It is impossible to use any domain name registrar to look up the registration information for any domain registered with OnlineNIC (Search). All the other domain lookups try to go to OnlineNIC (Search for OnlineNIC), and are failing at this time. OnlineNIC (Search) has been acting as a reseller of domain name registration services, offering co-branded domain registration to their resellers. The whois lookup of all the resellers is also giving errors, such as "checksum error". This is in violation of current ICAN rules that require all registrars to maintain publicly accessible WhoIs?Create|Search records about their domain name registrants.
Other investigations we've done indicate that OnlineNIC (Search for OnlineNIC) is being used by a number of domain squatters. When someone requests to buy one of these squatted domains, the squatters demand that you use a bank wire to wire them hundreds of dollars for a domain name. This seems to be very questionable, as the squatters are typically located in China, as is OnlineNIC (Search for OnlineNIC). If someone requests to use an escrow service, the squatters claim to have no reason to try to try and cheat on the registration, but if you want escrow services, they demand that you use OnlineNIC (Search for OnlineNIC) escrow service. The OnlineNIC (Search for OnlineNIC) escrow service details page is very unprofessional, and contains a number of problems. One of the biggest problems is that they do not seem to be licensed. If you request of the squatters that they use a licensed escrow service, such as http://www.escrow.com they will say they can not use that service.
Due to this combination of problems, one should take extra care in dealing with this kind of situation.
