  • The Carey brothers like websites that are user friendly and explain things
    • Check out www.firstalert.com - home safety products - CO alarms - all about carbon monoxide.
    • Then click on help me choose a CO alarm. It shows different rooms in your home and where you can put a battery operated model which can be installed anywhere, or you can do a plug in model that plugs into any outlet, and some feature digital displays that show you elevated levels of Carbon Monoxide in the air.
  • hot water is a fantastic way to get rid of old carpet pad which has disintegrated and merged with a concrete or wood floor. It also works great for vinyl backing. Hot water and a scraper will work amazingly well.

  • Has a 13 year old house with stapled in cedar shake roof. The staples are coming out, and the shakes are starting to come off the roof.
  • Carey brothers say that 13 years is the life of the roof. Many building departments will not allow you to repair the roof, but will force you to replace it if it is damaged more than a certain amount.
  • You'll want to call a roofer to restaple, since the interlacing of the shingles is tricky.

  • Replace the diaphragm, put a new piece of rubber in there. A replacement valve is also easy to install.

• House levelling question - how do I get someone to do this, and what do I look for
  • Find someone who specializes in house levelling. Contact the trade association to find a contractor who specializes in this task. A general contractor might be a good place to begin. Talk to them about piers, stabilization methods, adjustable jacks, etc.
