Novator Open File Manager V9 Release Notes
OPEN FILE MANAGER (TM) V9 Release Notes
I OVERVIEW II INSTALLATION
III RELEASE LIMITATIONS
I OVERVIEW
CONTROL COMPONENT: The Open File Manager Setup Program installs the Control Component (User Interface) to a Windows NT / 2000 / XP / Server 2003 computer. See Section II, below, or "Installation" in the documentation.
DOCUMENTATION: The full product documentation is available both in Help and in Adobe PDF. If you received a CD, the OFMHelp.pdf is in the root of the Open File Manager distribution. You can review it before proceeding. The PDF will also be copied to the "OFM\" installation directory, regardless of the medium you received.
SYSTEM COMPONENTS: Once installed, the Control Component is used to view the Open File Manager Documentation, and to install the System Components to computers that are backed-up. See "Installation" in the documentation.
CONFIGURATION: After installing the System Components, a few configuration settings should be made. See "Quick Configuration" in the Help.
SUPPORT: If you have questions or require direct assistance, please contact our Technical Support. See "References" in the Help.
BACKUP APPLICATIONS: Open File Manager supports virtually all backup applications. This release of Open file Manager includes support for the NetWare?Create 6.x operating system. For those backup applications that are not yet fully compliant with the NetWare?Create 6 NSS programming interface, an option to Mount Synchronized volumes is available. See the Control Component's System | Properties | NSS command, applied to NetWare?Create 6 systems, if this feature is needed.
II INSTALLATION OF OPEN FILE MANAGER
Version Compatibility: This release of Open File Manager is compatible with versions 7.x and above. If you are currently using version 6.x or earlier, you must uninstall that version (both Control and System Components) prior to installing this release.
Trial Serial Number: 14-2f-043d-0888
Open File Manager is distributed on CD-ROM and as a self-extracting archive file. Proceed with installation from either medium as follows:
1 Serial Number: If you purchased Open File Manager, have on-hand the product serial number that you were given. Otherwise, the installation will provide you with a default serial number that enables full product functionality for a limited period.
2 Administrative Workstation: Select a Windows NT / 2000 / XP / Server 2003 computer from which you administer the Windows and NetWare?Create systems that you backup. Log onto this computer as a user with administrative rights to the local system and the systems that you backup.
3 Stop the Local System Component: If the Windows System Component is already running on the selected computer, then it must be uninstalled before proceeding. To do this, run the Open File Manager Control Component – either an already-installed copy, or a new copy installed to another Windows computer. From the Control Component, Stop the Windows System Component, and restart the computer. See System | Stop. Then uninstall the System Component. See System | uninstall.
4 Run Setup:
If you received Open File Manager on CD-ROM, put it in the Windows computer’s CD drive. Run the Setup Program, Setup.exe, from the Open File Manager files on the CD-ROM.
(Novell's Client for NetWare?Create V4.81 or later may cause an error "WOWEXEC caused a general protection fault in moduleKRNL386.exe." This is resolved by a Novell Client update. See http://support.novell.com/servlet/filedownload/pub/291158.exe/.)
If you received a self-extracting archive of Open File Manager, run that file. It will unpack the archive and run the Setup Program automatically.
5 Welcome: A Welcome message will be displayed recommending that you exit all Windows programs before continuing with the installation. Do so, and click the NEXT button to continue.
6 License: Read and agree with the Software License Agreement. If you do not agree with the license agreement, Open File Manager will not install. Click the YES button to continue.
7 ReadMe?Create: Read the ReadMe?Create.txt file that is now displayed - it contains important information as an addendum to the User Manual and Online Help System. This file will be copied to the installation directory, later in the installation process. After reviewing the ReadMe?Create.txt file, click YES to continue.
8 User: Enter your name, your organization, and the product serial number.
If this is a new installation of Open File Manager, the serial number defaults to a live trial for evaluation purposes. (This serial number is in SerialNo?Create.txt, on the distribution medium.) Override this default if you have purchased the product.
If Open File Manager is already installed, that current installation’s serial number is used as the default. Override this default if you purchased a version upgrade.
The product serial number must be entered exactly as printed, including the dashes. Click the NEXT button to continue.
9 Setup Type: Choose a Setup action, normally OFM Installation.
OFM Installation installs the Open File Manager Control Component.
Download Latest Version, if available, will download the latest version of Open File Manager as a self-extracting archive. This is helpful if you want the latest maintenance release. After downloading, run the archive to restart the installation process. Do not choose this option again, the second time through.
OFM Uninstall uninstalls all Open File Manager components found on the computer.
Disk Image makes a copy of the Open File Manager CD-ROM image, on your local hard drive or network drive. This is helpful for network-based installs and SMS-based installs, or to save an unpacked version of the self-extracting archive.
10 Destination: Choose a local installation directory, normally the default under Windows’ Program Files folder. The BROWSE button can be used to choose a different directory. Click the NEXT button to continue.
11 Program Folder: Choose a Windows Start Menu | Programs folder to contain links to Open File Manager programs, normally the default under All Users. Click the NEXT button to continue.
12 Start Copying: The setup program now has enough information to start copying the product files. If you want to change any settings, click the BACK button. When you are satisfied with the settings, click the NEXT button to begin copying files.
13 Copying: All product files are now copied from the distribution medium, and a program group for Open File Manager is created. The program group folder is displayed in the foreground. You will need to close or move it to continue.
14 Control Component Complete: The Setup Program has now completed the installation of the Open File Manager Control Component.
15 Windows System Component: If the Setup Program is running on Windows, it will offer to install the Windows System Component to this computer.
If this is a system that is backed-up, enable this option. This will install the Windows System Component.
16 Register: If available, registration will provide you with a free support period, and if you purchased extended maintenance, will activate it.
III RELEASE LIMITATIONS
When installing a major version upgrade of Open File Manager (e.g version 8.1 to 9.x) you must make sure the serial number is upgraded, otherwise the newly installed system component will fail to start. When doing a major version upgrade do not use the Install option presented during the control component installation. Instead use the Install command in the Control Component. When using the Control Component to install the System Component on a computer that has a previous version of the system component, you must:
Overwrite the old configuration. This will update all components correctly but you will lose the configurations settings established using the previous version of Open File Manager.
If you are using the Novell Client for Windows on any machines in the network, it is suggested that you disable client caching on any machines that update data managed by Open File Manager.
Open File Manager does not support VSS on AMD64 systems (it will support AMD64 when Microsoft releases the 64-bit SDK).
