Speaking with HSI on 9/28/2004 about their education programs:
- Why not Griegs university? It is better to go through a program that is sponsored by one of the local universities like Andrews or CUC.
- The CUC program is very good.
- For eventual further studies, like Masters of Divinity, they recommend the major in theology most (Bachelor of Arts In Theology).
- Major in religion in religion is intended for broading understanding.
- CUC single credit hour $230. Additional supplies per course: $60 - $200
- Complete degree possible from home. The degree is full acredited and carries the same weight as sitting in classes at the University.
- Minimum GPA - 2.0 for transfering credits in
- Why the Masters program for French or German language? What about Russian? A lot of early religious writings are in French and German. It's probably more important, for the Andrews program, that coming into the program, have some understanding of Greek.
- What are the courses like? Are there online discussion groups, and set times for lectures? There will always a way to be in contact with your own teacher. Most of the contact is with your teacher instead of the other students. Within the next few years we are starting to work on getting the courses online. It is in the beginning stages. At that point we are going to work on having a lockstep program requring registering at a particular time, and all doing the course in parallel. This other option would make all students register at the same time and deal with online discussion boards.
- There is a course textbook. In addition to that for every course, you get a syllabus and a study guide. The study guide has what is the equivalent of lecture notes. Outlining the day to day to reading assignemnts. And homeowrk assignments. Mail in the assignemnts, they are graded, and then returned. Usually one or two exams in each course, they are proctored, could be proctored by my local pastor. The biggest guide is the study guide. For every reading is accompanied by a set of notes. not neccessarily written by the teacher grading the work. These are generated by HSI every few years. Study notes vary. Some seem to be 200 pages, 8'5x11 sheets, typed in 12 pt font, not as much reading as textbook. Seen some that are 60 pages, some that are 200, it really depends on the course.
- Can get pretty much all of the books on Amazon.
- In a few of the classes, a lot of the material is in the study guide itself. The readings are spring boards to the discussion in the study guide. Looking through some of the books that are required, and they seem like you would get information from them, they expect them to be not everything about the
- I remember in my undergrad, for every 3 hours in a course, I would another 6 hours outside of it.
- If you do know you'd like to enroll in the program, you want to get your application started, you can enroll even before it is started.
- A minor is not offered through the extension program. General studies degree could declare 2 concentrations. It really does depend on what you plan on doing with the degree. Planning on going on to the M.Div. There are so many prerequisites for the masters that you'd need a lot of courses.
- There are a handful of elective courses.
- French and Spanish and Greek.
- They are likely to not worry about a lack of formal of german, the german needed for the masters could be offered as part of the masters program. Another thing to be aware of, one of the other things they list as the prerequisite: latin.
- Talked with Rhohini at HSI
