Welcome to the Chat11 Wiki! These instructions will hopefully help you get off to a good start here. I promise if you follow these instructions, you'll be able to quickly create new and interesting pages on the internet, without learning HTML, without needing any special software, without buying web hosting, without learning to use FTP. "I guarantee it!" - Garnet
- Why Wiki?
- Wiki is a fun place where you can edit almost any page in the system.
- You don't have to learn HTML to create a web page on a wiki! It's much simpler than that!
- You don't have to wait for an editor to approve things, what you type goes live when you hit save! And anyone after you can also edit any page you edit. It is great for truly collaborative discussion and web development.
- See something that you could improve? Be bold, click the "Edit text of this page" link, and go for it!
- A complete revision history is maintained for every page, to let you easily see who has changed what, and restore something older if you make a mistake.
- The RecentChanges link at the top of screen lets you see what people have been recently editing.
About These Instructions
Here are the sections you'll find here:
- "How To Use Two Browser Windows" - Follow this to make it easier to see these instructions, and a separate browser window to use to follow the instructions
- "Setting Up Your Account On This Wiki" - Creating your account on this system, it's optional but recommended
- "Getting Started - Creating Your User Account" -
- "How To Make Your First Wiki Page" - How to start editing your wiki home page here, or how to use the sandbox to start your first wiki page.
- "Getting Started Making A New Page Using The Sandbox" - Tells you how to use the sandbox to create the first link to the new page you want to create.
- "Editing Your First Wiki Page"
- "How To Write A Wiki Page" - Gives you the basics of how to create links, bold text, and more in your wiki pages.
How To Use Two Browser Windows
The best way to follow these instructions is to have two browser windows side by side: One with these instructions, and the other where you follow the instructions. Click To Open A Second Browser Window
Important: Whenever the instructions below tell you to click on something, they mean to do the click in the second window that you just opened.
It is best if you resize this browser window, and the one you came from, so they are side by side. On a Microsoft Windows PC, you can click and drag the borders of this window and the other window so that you can see these instructions, and the other window, at the same time.
Or print this page out for reference.
Setting Up Your Account On This Wiki
- How To Get Credit For Your Edits If you are expecting some kind of 'create a new account function', the instructions "Getting Started - Creating Your Account" are where you should start.
- Why you should create an account: The system can give you automatic credit in the logs for all the pages you edit. Be bold, let the world know you are here. Everywhere your name is mentioned, there will be a link to your home page on this system.
Getting Started - Creating Your User Account
- 1. Click on the Preferences link at the top of the web page (in the other window)
- 2. Be sure to write down your User ID number that is shown at the top of the screen.
- 3. Type in the user name you want, and a password. Your username can be any word or combination of words without spaces. (For example, your first name and last name, or a two or three word nickname. Or even a single word.) If you have more than one word, put the two words together with no spaces, and capitalize the first letter of each word. For example: GarnetChaney (This is called CamelCase )
- 4. Set the password to whatever you want. To use the login, you must set a password. Be sure to write the password, and User ID number down. There is no way to retrieve them later.
- 5. Enter your email address
- 6. You can ignore the rest of the settings
- 7. Click Save at the bottom of the page.
After you click Save, you will automatically be logged in on your computer. A cookie is saved on your computer so this wiki can remember you when you come back.
- 8. Do you see your name now on the top of the webpage, just after the link to Contents?
- 9. Click the link you your name, that is your new homepage on this Wiki!
- 10. Bookmark your new home page by using the "Favorites" function of your webbrowser. This will make it easy to return to your new wiki home page.
- 11. Now go down to the section "Editing Your First Wiki Page"
How To Make Your First Wiki Page
Did you follow the above instructions to set your preferences? If so, click on the link of your new username, and you'll be on your own personal home page on this system. Skip down to the section Editing Your First Wiki Page
If you did not create an account, go to "Getting Started Making A New Page Using The Sandbox"
Getting Started Making A New Page Using The Sandbox
If you didn't do the above, you can still create a sand box page to practice editing on. Here is how to do that:
If you are not already here at this website, in the other window, go to http://www.chat11.com
At the top of the other screen, click on the link for Contents.
Scroll down the page, and look for the link to TestPage . Click on the TestPage link.
At the bottom of the new page, look for "Edit text of this page". Click on the link.
Now you will be editing the TestPage . Anywhere on the test page, add a two or three word phrase, using no spaces, and capitalizing the first letter of each word. Any of these would be fine: ThisIsBobsPage ThisIsMyFirstTest?Create?Create HelloWorld . These are all good CamelCase names for Wiki pages.
Go to the bottom of the page and click Save.
Congratulations, you've just added a link to a new page!
Now look at the text, find the new text you added, and click on the question mark (?) after the phrase. That will take you to the new page you just made a link to.
Editing Your First Wiki Page
Before the following steps: You must follow either the "Getting Started - Creating Your User Account" instruction to create an account and get to your new wiki home page, or "Getting Started Making A New Page Using The Sandbox" to create a link to the new page you want to create.
1. In the other window, you should be a looking at a screen that says something like Welcome to Edit a New Page!, or Welcome To A New Page! Look down to the bottom of the page in the first window, and look for the link 'Edit text of this page'. Click on the link. (Note: I've hidden the edit this page link on this page, so be sure you are looking at the other web browser window.)
2. Your browser should go to a page that says "Editing ...." and has a large text box with some text like "Describe the new page here." in it. Go ahead and erase the words "Describe the new page here", and begin writing your new home page.
3. Type any text you want in the window. To start a new line, have a blank line in your text.
Some hints of things you can do on your page:
To create a link to another page, just type it's CamelCase name, which is two or more words typed with uppercase first letters, and no spaces between the words. (There are more instructions about this later).
Create some large text by putting a single = (equal sign) character as the first and last character on a line of text.
Create bold text by putting a triple single quote around some text, like this Bold Text
Type some words for a new page you want to create, surrounded by a double square bracket, for example [Chris's Favorite Books]?Create
Make links to other websites just by typing in a complete web address, for example http://www.garnetchaney.com
4. When you are done typing, click on the Save button.
5. When the browser goes to the next page, you'll see the new page that you just created!
Congratulations! You've created a brand new page on this Wiki!
To make more changes to your homepage, click the "Edit text of this page" button. If you ever want to see an old version of your home page, (like if you accidentally delete something or change your mind), you can click on "View Other Revisions" to see older versions of your home page.
Starting Your Online Bookmarks Collection
A really cool way to use this wiki is to keep track of your favorite websites. You can keep your bookmarks collection online here. Your friends can easily contribute new bookmarks to your list, and you can have your bookmarks available from any computer.
Here is how to create a page for your bookmarks collection:
1. Go to your home page
2. Click "Edit this page"
3. Add this text (substituting your full name, of course):
[John Smiths Bookmark Collection]?Create
4. Click on save
5. Now you'll see your home page, and on the page you'll see "John Smiths Bookmark Collection" followed by a question mark (and maybe the word "Create"). This shows you that the wiki has no content for this page yet.
6. Click on that word Create to create your new web page.
7.
How To Write A Wiki Page
Impatient Persons Guide To Basic Wiki Formatting Rules (Read this to find how to do a lot of formatting on your wiki pages without learning any HTML!)
To create Bold Text, surround the bold text with triple single quotes, like this: BOLD TEXT
To create Italics Text, surround the bold text with two single quotes, like this: ITALICS TEXT
To create a new page, make up a CamelCase name that describes the new page you want to write. For example: HowToRaiseChickens?Create?Create, ChickensAsPets?Create?Create, ChickenRecipes
To link to an existing page, do one of the following with it's name:
Type it's name between double brackets: ChickensAsPets?Create This works for any page name, even single word page names.
Or, if it is a CamelCase name, just type the CamelCase name of the page in regular text, like this ChickensAsPets?Create?Create
When you save the page, you'll see the text will have a little question mark, ?, after the link. That means the system can't find the page. Think of that question mark as your perosnal invitation to add a new page to this system! Click on the question mark, and you'll be editing a new page that you can save and publish to the world.
To link to another website, just type the complete URL of one of it's pages, for example http://www.50statecenter.com creates this link: http://www.50statecenter.com
You can also link to an external site, while giving text for the link. Do that by putting the URL, followed by text for the link, in single brackets: [Ohio State Center] will create this link: [Ohio State Center]
When you put the words together with no spaces, and capitalize each word, it is called CamelCase , and it is a very good way to create names for pages on this system.
If the page has a single word name, like Subjects, put the word in double brackets like this: Subjects
You can also put CamelCase names in the double brackets, and you can use a pipe symbol, | , to give the link totally different text. For example You've Got To Read This Totally Cool Guide To How To Create A New Page On The Net , which of course makes this link: You've Got To Read This Totally Cool Guide On How To Create A New Page On The Net Without Knowing HTML or having any special software or FTP or anything!
Another way to create link, is to use double brackets, and put some words with normal spacing in the brackets. (Please don't use any special symbols). For example, Some of my Bookmarks and Favorites will make this link: Some of my Bookmarks and Favorites
What's Next?

But I do welcome your comments. Please click on NewUsersGuideDiscussion and add any comments you have about this introduction. I really do appreciate your feedback. Garnet
