More Heart Risks For Women
Taking care of grandchildren or ailing husbands appears to put women at a higher than normal risk of heart attack.
These findings, from the Harvard School of Public Health's long-term nurses' study, show that the stress of care giving can take a big toll on health.
Earlier this year, study results revealed that women who spend nine or more hours a week caring for a sick or disabled spouse have an increased risk of heart attack. Newer data from the same study suggest that these findings also apply to women who spend nine hours or more each week taking care of grandchildren. The latest results were published in the November 2003 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The earlier results were published in the Journal's February 2003 issue.
The stress of caring for a spouse may stem from a combination of seeing a loved-one suffer, financial pressures and balancing work with responsibilities at home. But the researchers also speculated that when you devote much of your time to others, you may often neglect your own needs. To protect your heart, make an effort to exercise, eat right and get enough sleep .
