Our policy managers in Washington DC have been talking about this for years... Years ago two german scientists invented a process to produce very clean fuel from coal.
The south africans have been doing it for 30 years producing 300,000 barrels of oil a day.
Montana has 30% of the recoverable coal in the united states.
We have enough coal and shale to supply our fuel needs for 150 years.
150 feet high. And the metal on the walls is 2 inches thick. You dump tons of coal in this thing. High pressure steam, 1000 PSI over 1000 degrees. You get methane gas. Now you have natural gas. That's coal gasification.
You can use it like that for 25% of the cost of the price to drill for gas now. Buella North Dakota has been doing this for 20 years. Until recently the price for drilling for gas in Montana was $1.50 per MCF, now it's $12 per MCF.
All of the mercury and arsenic in coal gets sequested by this process. Sulfur can be turned into fertilizer. The heavy metals can be used in industry.
Pump it into a high pressure vessel. 150 feet high, 20-30 feet across. Use iron ore, or cobalt as a catalyst. When you put the gas into the vessel with a catalyst, after breaking the atoms apart, they can then be put back into whatever order you choose. You end up making a cleaner fuel. $1 a gallon, or $42 a barrel.
Other countries are ahead of us on this:
Exxon is building one of these plants to convert natural gas directly to diesel in the gulf.
We're doing this with our competitors in other countries, but in the U.S. we are just doing an energy policy that is the same as the past.
If you google "coal to liquid" or "fischer tropes", you'll be reading about this 80 year old technology.
If you want energy security, look at Montana. Washington can't even pull on their own pants.
In the energy plan, they are going to build a 5000 barrel plant.
If china can do it, is ahead of the united states of america!
By 1953 in St. Louis Missouri, the American government was making gasoline from coal, about 1000 barrels a day. Around the same time the deal was inked for the big oil companies to get oil from Saudi Arabia.
