Caller talking about jobs moving overseas, and immigrants taking American jobs
Mike wants everyone in this country to be here legal. He is not lax on that part of immigration. Mike says you can't round up all the current illegals, and the barn door has been open too long, and even in employers would hire them, then they'd just convert to a life of crime, so Bush's plan to legalize the current illegal immigrants is better than that.
Mike says that many construction employers have trouble finding people who will actually get to work, do the work, and have a car to go to work in.
Caller says that kids need to learn to work more. Parents who say children wont work a menial job are destroying the work ethic of their kids.
Caller "Scott" calling about gay marriage issue being a back burner issue. The caller is in the entertainment business, he has no problem with gays, but the gay issue is a long term problem, and the caller sees it is as a major problem because it is unweaving the fabric of our civilization. To the caller it is a very immediate issue and a danger. The caller thinks it is wrong and against nature, and children shouldn't be brought up to believe that gay marriage is fine.
Caller "Steve" from Columbus Ohio: Is amazed by Mike's definition of labor market. Caller says Mike thinks it is ridiculous to call an employee offering too little money for Americans, a labor shortage, and it is rigging the market to let immigrants come in and fill the job. Normally the employer should be forced to raise the wage to attract more people, instead of just bringing people from across the border. The caller says the market should set the pay rate. Mike says that McDonalds are advertising signing bonuses just to get employees. Caller says that legalizing the illegal immigrants is the government coming in and rigging the market. Why should the government artificially increase the supply of people? Mike says so there is plenty of working Americans. Caller says that higher wages would get enough workers.
Mike says that teenagers in this one scenario, the teenagers get money to do nothing, so why would the teenager go to work for McDonalds when they can instead get money for doing nothing. Caller says that business wants indentured servants who it can pay really low wages under threat of deportation. Mike says that if the car wash needed to pay $20 an hour to get teenagers, then the car wash would cost $25, and people would stay home and wash their own cars, and there would be no car wash. The caller thought it would be ok for the business to go out if people aren't willing to pay enough to support the service and product.
Caller "Mike" in Columbus: Calling about the Catholic priests and abuse scandal. Forgiveness used to be part of our lexicon and maybe we should have compassion for those priests. Caller is surprised no one ever says anything like that.
