NOTE: At this point I have only read through a few of the help screens about OneNote (Search for OneNote), and watched the introduction. I've been using OneNote (Search) for only a couple of hours at this point. So a lot of this is stream of consciousness, trying to catch my first impressions.
- Doesn't seem to have any function to place an anchor in one note, and a link from another note to point to the anchor. What a shame, it would be almost as useful as Wiki if it could do that. If only it had a programming language, it would be as useful as hypercard... Must look at interfacing VBA with One Note data...
- It seems really neat. I made a very colorful todo list outline with it, it was a lot of fun making the outline.
- When picking up a highlighter to highlight some previously written text, it's not obvious how to switch back to text mode.
- After highlighting some text, then clicking on the menus, OneNote (Search) went into long pause, like as if it was crashed. It came back after 20 or 30 seconds.
- If you draw a highlight over some text, then insert some new text above, the highlight does not travel with the text it used to be over! The highlight stays anchored to that absolute position on the page. Dumb! I suppose I should be shift selecting the text, then right clicking to set font properties of the text or something in order to put a highlighted background on given text.... Oh oops, sorry, I can't do that, there is no Font Properties in the right click for some selected text. But I can go to the menu, or hit Ctrl-D. However, background highlighting of the text is not an offered option. Can set the foreground color, font, size, , bold/italic/underline/strikehtrough/superscript/subscript, and that is it.
- It is very hard to draw the hilighter accurately over a line of text using a touchpad. It's very easy to go wavy and end up highlighting parts of above and below lines.
August 9, 2006 update on another long pause situation:
- Been trying to use Microsoft OneNote (Search) on Sony VGN-U8 micro-pc. I was using it in drawing mode to take notes that I was writing on the touch sensitive screen. I wasn't using any kind of hand writing recognition. I just wanted One Note to keep the graphic of my writing.
- Once I got to a point where I had two or three screens worth of notes, adding additional space to the end of the page started taking a very long time, like 30 seconds to a minute.
- I was taking notes of a presentation, and the reactions of someone to the presentation. Needless to say that loosing a minute or so at various points during the 15 minute presentation, was very frustrating.
- Today I tried this again, to use One Note for taking notes from a TV program. I was able to easily recreate the long delay while taking the One Note notes.
- I had taskmgr running, and I discovered that when I'd click the extend the page icon, during the long pause Microsoft OneNote (Search for OneNote) would have the processor at 100% usage, and the amount of memory would increase by 10MB or so. By the time I had a OneNote (Search for OneNote) that was a few screens long, OneNote (Search) had jumped from 40MB of memory usage up to over 100MB.
- I have installed the Microsoft OneNote (Search) Service Pack 1.
- The Sony VGN-U8 has a 900 MHZ celeron, with 256MB of ram. I was using the machine on batteries, but I also set it to desktop performance to try and get maximum processor speed. Control Panel system applet reported a speed of 893MHZ, so the machine definitely wasn't in some kind of slow processor speed mode.
This problem with Microsoft OneNote (Search) makes it unusable to take any significant amount of handwritten notes that aren't converted to text. Microsoft OneNote (Search)'s process of getting extra memmory to extend a page seems to be very slow.
Also with Microsoft OneNote (Search) running on Windows XP, and not Table PC Windows, it appears that there is no way to have OneNote (Search for OneNote) attempt to convert the notes to text. There are menu items about how to treat the writing, whether as a drawing or as handwriting, and neither setting makes any difference, the notes are still kept just as a graphic.
