Meta Tags refer to information hidden in the HEAD section of a webpage that give information to search engines about things like:
The meta keywords tag for a webpage does not have to contain words that are actually found on the webpage. In the past this was used to keyword spam the search engines with terms totally unrelated to the content of the webpages. For this reason, today many search engines don't pay a lot of attention to the keywords meta tag on webpages.
Some search engines use the meta description, or metadescription, tag to decide what to display about a webpage. But the meta description tags have been misused by so many webmasters to try and keyword spam the search engines, that many search engines may not pay much attention to meta tags.
