- Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lungs thought to be caused primarily by asbestos (Search for asbestos) exposure. This cancer is diagnosed with a thoracoscopy.
- Asbestos is now known to be the most common cause of the disease mesothelioma. The asbestos fibers are very fine and when breathed in they lodge in the smallest airways of the lung. They cannot be coughed out.
- "Asbestos" means "inextinguishable" - Asbestos was used as early as 4000 BC. It was original used in wicks for lamps and candles. In the 1890s, asbestos, which previously had few industrial uses, becomes a raw material for large manufacturing industries, exposing large numbers of workers to asbestos dust for the first time.

- Important dates relating to mesothelioma:
- 1918 - A Prudential Insurance Company refused to cover asbestos workers because of the "health-injurious conditions of the industry."
- 1929 - The first known asbestos lawsuit. It was in New Jersey.
- 1930 - U.S. Bureau of Mines letter stated "It is now known that asbestos dust is one of the most dangerous dusts to which man is exposed."
- 1973 - The EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) begins a ban on spray-on asbestos insulation because of it's hazardous air pollution.
- 2003 - Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) drafts legislation for a $108 billion national trust fund to compensate asbestos victims. It also had provisions to set a limit on business liability and ease the filing of lawsuits.
