SMS Spam Sampler: SMS Spam Received During A Recent Trip to Malaysia
Subjects > World > Countries?Create > Malaysia
While in Malaysia, I often get a prepaid cell phone card. On this trip, I've noticed a great increase in the amount of SMS being sent. Some of it, unfortunately, even seems to come from the provider of the number. The carrier, Celcom, with eXplore phone account, has a bonus 10 ringitt of air time if you send in a questionaire that asks all kinds of information about interests, religion, and all kinds of other things. Doubtless this is so they can send more directed SMS spam.

Some of the messages received include:
- Hartladn concert organized @ Pearl International Hotel, batu 5, jalan klang lama. Pelican I, 3rd floor. Start @ 8pm. 30 NOV. Please invite friend to go. From Jackson. 28/11 13:24 +60192143246
- Pastikan anda menggunakan kod awalan 013 / 019 untuk membuat sebarang panggilan keluar atau menghantar SMS. Cth: 0191234567/0131234567. Terima Kasih. Date 04/12 23:47 Number: 4000
- You have 1 new voice msg. Please dial 166745401 Date 19/12 Time:13:18 6745401
- This was particularly urgent, it came in several times in one night. The (16) prefix is different from my own, so it indicates the message is probably from some other cell phone carrier than my own, so it is very unlikely to be a voice mail service actually attached to my line. In Malaysia, the caller pays all the costs for a cell phone call. I've seen messages like this several times, so the SMS spammers think that this kind of SMS spam actually works to get people to call them at no charge to themselves. For as little as about US$60 a month, they can get the rights to send unlimited SMS spam messages.
