Malaria is a life threatening parasitic infection transmitted to humans through the bites of infected insects. Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease that causes over 2.7 million deaths per year. Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease. Many of the victims are children, and protecting these children from malaria is a major goal of current programs.
Malaria is caused by four different species of the single celled protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium.
Malaria is not a problem in the United States, but it kills more than 1 million people each year.
Previously extremely widespread, the malaria is now mainly confined to Africa, and parts of Asia. In Africa it is both a disease of poverty, and a cause of poverty.
Malaria is particularly devastating in Africa, where it kills an African child every 30 seconds.
The World Health Organization is responsible for policy and strategy formulation, operations support and capacity development, and coordination of WHO's global efforts against the disease.
Misdiagnosis of malaria is common in the identification of uncomplicated disease and in the diagnosis of severe or complicated malaria. According to experts, potentially fatal species of malaria are being commonly misdiagnosed as a more benign form of the disease, thereby putting lives at risk. So some programs focus on improving the diagnosis of malaria.
