Your email survey gave these choices as to things we'd like to see you work on:
Those answers miss the boat entirely... How about "REDUCE TAXES! ELIMINATE PORK BARREL SPENDING! CUT BACK ON THE NANNY STATE!" Seems like most of the options listed above do exactly the opposite.
For years I was unable to afford the deductibles on the dental care provided by my job because of high taxes, and double taxes on things like phased out deductions for child care expenses because $30,000 a year as a single parent in California was "too much" to qualify for the full deduction. So you tax me when I make the money, give me no credit back when I pay the babysitter, and then tax her again on it when she receives it. If I hadn't discovered cheaper dental work in foreign countries, I probably would have lost many of my teeth.
The tax rate on a middle income family, at all levels, plus registrations, permits, time spent understanding government rules, time wasted being called to jury duty, complying with smog check rules, etc., is especially bad for those who because of bad credit and lack of savings couldn't buy into the overheated California real estate market. For some, the total tax burden is possibly nearing 50% of income. That is outrageous.
Please support the flat tax on consumption, so people can really see how much money they are spending on taxes. Stop hiding our taxes in ever greater deductions taken out of our pay, and out of our employers pockets, before we ever even get to see our any and make any choices with it.
And make taxes fair. Sponsor a state measure to stop allowing local special elections to have parcel tax ballot measures that unfairly exempt "seniors" from the tax, as recently happened here in Novato. That kind of exemption only lets senior home owners, many of whom are sitting on lots of equity, avoid the tax that a neighboring senior who is only a renter gets forced to pay when their landlord increases the rent to pass on the increased taxes. If you want to provide seniors an exemption, let them go to the school and provide help at the school in their free time, and get a voucher that can be used on their own parcel tax, or towards their landlords parcel tax. In fact, make it fair to all, so that if I as a middle aged renter can find the time to go and volunteer, I can get a voucher to give to my landlord to get me out of getting socked with the increase in rent too.
You need to work harder to help us keep our money in our pockets, not continuing having to give so much to goverment to put in someone else's pocket.
