Introduction
There will never be too many Lives of the Saints. The reason is because the saints are friends of God; they tell us of God; they bring us nearer to God - and the world does need God. In a sense the saints are common property - an interreligious elite, as it were. They have lived their lives; they have said their say and, even though their words or deeds may hae harred their environment, past or present, the common verdict is in their favor. Even those oputside the Catholic Church cannot but sense an irresistible attraction towards them. And while this attraction may stem from curiosity, it is apt gradually to engender admiration, if not imitation.
For this reason the saints are the best promoters and champions of the Church. Doctrine and cult, morals and discipline, may offer difficulties to the understanding and full appreciation, but when tenets and precepts are seen embodied in flesh and blood, and when mortals behold in one of their own kind as in a mirror the gloy of the Lord, as St. Paul world have it (II Cor. iii, 18), then what might have appeared unbelievable, if not unreasonable, will in time force upon us a clear-cut fait accompli and bring all fantasy from its rarefied atmosphere down to the daily drudgery of human existence.
Usually biographies of saints are limited to dates and outstanding events in their lives. This is in keeping with the age-old proverb, Verbum sonat, exemplum tonat. For examples are more forceful than words, and sainthood is proven by the deeds that follow and substantiate the words spoken or pledges made. Nonetheless, the more observant student is anious to delve into the inner consciousness of the person who has achieved great things and to analyze and coordinate the thoughts and feelings of the soul that found its way from this Valley of Tears to the Mountain of God. To such students the present volume will serve as a welcome aid. The selected excerpts from the writings of certain saints will reveal not only the inner workings of his soul, but will also present a picture of the world in which he lived and moved as well as of his struggles and disappointments, of his triumphs and failures and, lastly, of the wise counsels he left for others.
