Lesson 1 Of Simpleology
Day 2 - Actually beginning the course. I did the quickstart video where he describes some basics of the course, and also tries to encourage you to actually begin the course. The course includes a check list to tell you exactly what to do each day. It's important to print out all these items.
The first day first exercise is to rate your life on a 1-10 scale regarding your energy level, happiness, efficiency, health, and wealth. The past few weeks have been a challenging time, so my ratings have some room for improvement.
The next tasks are to watch the quick start video, and print the checklist. After watching the quick start video, he asks to write by hand a commitment statement that you will finish the entire course, and you will follow it from beginning to end, whether or not you understand the steps or why you are being asked to do them.
He also asks you to print out the "Simpleology 101 Virtuosity Book".
Then spend some time writing down the one thing you desire most in your life. As you might guess from the title, the course is simple. He doesn't spend a lot of time telling you how to discover what you want most in live. As I'm basically happy, I'm not quite sure what to do with this. I do have some things I need to achieve though, so I'll make my desire to take care of one or two of those items. I am not sure if I am keeping it simple enough, but that's ok, hopefully it will work with his plan.
Should I write down several parallel desires and work the course in parallel for each desire? I don't know, he doesn't say.
He also has some Simpleology 101 Memory joggers that he asks you to print multiple copies of, and post around your house. You are also to put the Virtuosity book in a 3 ring binder.
The next steps are to watch the Lesson 1 video, do the lesson 1 exercise, and take the Lesson 1 Quiz. The first lesson covers the first law of Simpleology, which is very geometrical: The shortest way to get between two points (he incorrectly calls them distances), is a straight line. He has an amusing exercise regarding the quickest way to take a sip of water. This points out and debunks so much of the superstition in other courses. It goes right to the heart of the problem I had years ago with hiring someone who was a "dreamer" when I needed a "doer". It seems like his course will be very concretely targeted at making people be doers and not just dreamers. He also makes the point that the course is not antithetical to any religion. He even gives some examples of other religions that mention that faith without action is worthless.
I took the Lesson 1 Quiz and scored 100% (50 points). The quiz videos are done with Macromedia flash, and the course quizes are nice too. The first quiz was multiple guess, with humorous choices for the wrong answers at each step. It would be pretty hard to score less than 100% on the first quiz. The quiz system he has setup leads you through the questions, gives you good feedback at each step, and lets you review the questions and correct answers afterwards. It is a very nice system.
I am not sure if he tries to prohibit doing more than one day at a time. He is very definite you need to complete each day in order. So I think I'll go on to the second day. The quick start video was only 10 or so minutes, and the lesson 1 video was only 5 minutes. I am probably spending more time writing about my journey here than I am taking it!
The next step for Day 1 is to write down what you learned from lesson 1. Here is my answer:
The next step is to write down how I will change and live my life differently:
The next step is to write down the top three obstacles:
Finally you can read as much as you want from the Virtuosity book, and also read aloud as much as you want. He says in the quick start that by the end of the course you should have completely read the virtuosity book at least once silently, and at least once out loud. He also says you can listen to as much of the book on MP3 audios as you want.
I next took a look at lesson 1 out of the virtuosity book. The book does a good job of repeating what you saw in the video. It seems to be an exact copy of the video. He discusses the voodoo method for trying to take a sip of water versus the direct action method.
I then took a listen to the first MP3. The high quality version of the MP3 is a 5 megabyte file, and it downloads in less than a minute on a highspeed connection. Unfortunately my music player, MusicMatch?Create, was busy bugging me about yet another upgrade it wants me to install, and didn't launch the MP3. So I navigate to the Mp3s I downloaded earlier. The MP3 is exactly the video I just watched and the lesson 1 that I just read.
