In the early days of the internet, webmasters would sometimes put keywords on their pages that had nothing to do with the actual content of the page, but were just there to try to attract traffic. This came to be known as keyword spam or keyword spamming.
There were many ways to hide keywords in pages, including the use of meta tags like meta keywords . Imagine a page about plumbing with the words "Britney Spears" hidden in the pages to try to get traffic from searches for pictures about Britney Spears. This was obviously a ridiculous way to attract traffic, it is highly unlikely that people searching for britney spears nude or britney spears pic, or britney spears toxic, would care anything at all about plumbing.
Within 5 years of the start of the world wide web in 1993, these fake pages started to become a major problem polluting the results of many search engines such as AltaVista?Create and Google. Eventually most search engines began ignoring meta tags such as meta keywords , and added a spam block with an anti spam filter to block the keyword spam.
