BETH-EL, West Bank, August 20 (HNN) - Jacob's Ladder, the famous [Stairway From Earth to Heaven] described in the Bible, and also in books such as [The Bible Story] was closed yesterday due to a collision with space debris.
Besides the usual space hazards of vacuum, radiation, micrometeoroids, and extreme conditions of heat and cold, in recent decades Jacob's Ladder has had to deal with human-made dangers: Broken pieces of satellites, left over rocket bodies, nuts, bolts, even large paint chips. All high velocity leftovers threaten this vital connection between heaven and earth.
In an accident reminiscent of the recent collision of aircraft with a major New York city landmark building, yesterday a particularly large piece of a failed communications satellite slammed into Jacob's Ladder, knocking out several rungs of the ladder, and damaging the upright supports.
According to the Bible, the ladder was named for Isaac and Rebekah's son named Jacob who had a dream at a place called Beth-el, or "House of the Lord".
Launched in 1971, the Russian SL-8 rocket stage has been a regular concern to angels on Jacob's ladder, as well as Officials with the United States Space Command. It is believed the agency has regularly shared it's concern with the heavenly operatives on Jacob's ladder. According to knowledgeable sources, angels transiting the ladder share information with NORAD.
Several experts discussed well known landmarks near Bethel, the location of the Earth end of the ladder. Many nearby landmarks, and the temple of Bethel itself, are suffering from a lack of maintenance. "They are in a kind of no man's land," said Adel Yahya, a West Bank Palestinian archaeologist who has become deeply involved in trying to restore and preserve the West Bank's biblical archaeological sites. "They are deteriorating rapidly because they don't have any kind of protection from either the Palestinian Authority or from the Israeli Department of Antiquities."
Even Jewish settlers from the bustling settlement of Beit El, less than a mile away, rarely visit.
Recently, however, Yahya has begun to escort Israeli and foreign tourists to Bethel and other such sites as part of the "off-the-beaten-track" Holy Land tours that he directs through his organization, Palestine Archaeological and Cultural Exchange (PACE).
Amazingly, scientists theorize that if Jacob's ladder's connection to earth was severed, the ladder would rise into the sky.
At 47000 kilometers on the Jacob's ladder there is a caution to the ascending angels to maintain a firm grip on the ladder. This is because, according to scientists, anyone losing their grip above that height would be flung off the ladder at greater than the local escape velocity, causing them to never return to the earth. In fact, a scientist named Pearson has shown that all the planets in the solar system can be reached by the technique of jumping off the ladder at various heights, and the trip takes no energy from the traveller, since the propulsion is supplied by the rotation of the earth. "God sure had a good time creating this cosmic extreme sport when He designed this ladder," said one experienced angel jumper.
