Why is there so much divorce?
We get married too young, too close to the poverty line, and when we are less educated.
The south is divorcing much more often than people in the North East or California.
Does Divorce Happen More In The South Because People Are Getting Married More There?
No, people are getting married at roughly the same rate. But more and more people in this country are deciding not to get married, and instead just live together. This is a huge growing segment of our population.
We have an idealism about marriage. No fault divorce is so easy to achieve, even easier to achieve that renewing your drivers license in some case.
This country is very much take the easy way out
In 1960 the divorce rate was 0.5%. Now it is over 60%.
There are over 40 million children in this country who are victims of divorce.
My parents were divorced and I turned out just fine...
Then why are you on your fourth marriage? I don't buy the current psychological propoganda that children of divorce are perfectly normal and fine. Almost a third of the children in this country are being raised by a single parent, and it is hard to imagine that this is a normal adaptable situation.
What about common law marriage?
Most states have abolished the common law marriage. Common law marriage was originally because of thinking that people didn't want to pay the $15 marriage license fee.
Why are some people living together with no intention of getting married?
They look at something that has less than a 50% chance or succeeding, why go through it?
I am a big believer in this concept of premarital counselling. So many people get married without a clue as to what marriage mean. Some counselling today is very basic:
Isn't it a good idea to live together before marriage?
People that live together before marriage are less likely to succeed than those that don't. This is statistically true.
You would think that living together would show quirks. But in reality, marriage seems to destroy the relationship.
What state are you most likely to stay married in?
The state that leads the country, the state you are most likely to stay married, is Massachusetts. So are New Jersey, New York. Tennessee, Alabama are much more likely for divorce.
Social scientists tell us that the North East is more stable than areas of the south, and also areas of the west such as Nevada.
We have this problem of divorce in the south that is not discussed. One of the morals ought to be the family.

How do you avoid turning the former spouse into an enemy?
This affects the children more than anyone. You have to learn to communicate with the other spouse in order for the divorce to be successful. They should also be careful with their lawyer, to avoid spending the family fortune on the lawyer.
The number one thing that people do wrong is to use their children as pawns during divorce.
Maybe some people aren't qualified to be married
One solution might be to make it harder to be married.
It's so sad, over a third of the children in this country are born to unmarried people. It's hard to believe that this helpful to our society. Comparing the american family with where it was 25 years ago, less than 25% of families consist of a mother, a father, and a child.
It probably started in the 1960's with the concept of no-fault divorce. There needs to be a middle ground between no one gets divorced, and the huge numbers of people who get divorced today.
It's very much the incredible selfishness of "I have to do what is right for me."
Are there laws being looked at in the southern states to fix this important issue of rampant divorce?
Louisiana, Arizona, they are pushing the covenant marriage idea, to make it harder to get married and get divorced.
I am concerned about who in the government will lead the charge of keeping the family together. Our politicians are not role models. The Bush administration wants to spend 1.5 billion dollars on a marriage education to teach us who to be married, but who will be the teachers?
I cringe when the politicians say "I'm going to show you how to live."
The churchs are doing a much better job on this issue than the politicians.
When politicians talk about family values, the question to ask is "Whose family values, certainly not yours...."
What time of year do most divorces occur?
Thanksgiving through New Years is the top seasons for divorce.

It's not in the top 5 of reasons for divorce. The post-monical lewinsky era has made this not a big issue.

I think the number one cause of a southern divorce is idealism. Contrast that with how easy it is to get a divorce, and it is driving people away from marriage.
What about divorce among movie stars and pastors?
Divorce seems to run rampant in the lives of the movie stars, and even in church related fields.
Many movie stars get married as a publicity stunt to revive a career.
Another amazing trend that is highly controversial is for divorce among pastors. However politicians telling us how to live marriage is incredible when you look at their track record.
