Yesterday, residents of Layfayette Indiana were surprised when an INS operation arrested a group of 20 illegals aliens. They were caught harvesting Cicada (Search)s from an orchard owned by the local Republican sheriff. The sheriff apparently allowed the illegals to harvest the insects, and the INS has confirmed that they were tipped off to the workers by local militia members.
The sheriff is now embroiled in controversy over his remarks that the illegal aliens were performing a job that no Americans wanted to do.
A noted international law scholar was interviewed on a local news program and gave his opinion that NAFTA permits harvesting of seasonal food supplies, such as cicadas, for shipment to other countries south of the border. An immigrant rights group called on the INS to issue a special class of visa to workers harvesting seasonal animals such as cicadas.
And a group opposing genetically altered foods issued a statement that cicadas, being a natural food source that has not yet been genetically tampered with, should be encouraged as a traditional seasonal food source.
