I. The Original Apostles - The Twelve

• As to their relations
  • Simon Peter and Andrew were sons of Jonas or John John 1:42;21:15
  • James and John were sons of Zebedee and Salome Matt 20:20;27:56; Mark 15:40;16:1
  • Matthew, originally Levi, was the son of Alphaeus Mark 2:14
  • James the Less is also called the son of Alphaeus, so he and Matthew were probably brothers. From John 19.25 and Mark 15:40 it would seem that Mary, the wife of Clopas (not Cleopas Luke 24:18 ), was the mother of James the Less, so that Clopas was Alphaeus
  • Jude was not the brother of James, as the Authorized Version has it, but the son of another James Luke 6:6
  • Judas was the son of Simon John 6:71;13 . In these references, the word "Iscariot" is attached to Simon and not to Judas, implying that father and son had the same name because they came from from Kerioth, in Judea.

• As to their dwelling places
  • Peter, Andrew, James,John and Philip lived in Bethsaida Mark 1:16-24; John 1:44;12:21 . The first four of these later lived in Capernum (Mark 1:21, 29).
  • John lived on in Jerusalem and then in Ephesus {{Acts 3:1; 15:6; Gal. 2:1, 9)
  • Matthew belonged to Bethsaida Mark 2:1,14
  • Bartholomew, who is Nathaniel, lived at Cana of Galilee John 21:2
  • Thomas, James the Less, Jude, and Simon the Zealot lived in Galilee
  • Judas Iscariot was the only Judean among the apostles

• As to their trades
  • Peter, Andrew, James and John were fishermen Mark 1:16,19
  • Matthew had been a tax collector Matt 9:9
  • We are not told the occupation of the other seven
