Scientists in Seoul report a breakthrough first cloning of human embryos in a "therapeutic" process. They created a line of embryonic stem cells. They hope to use these embryonic stem cells, which can grow into any kind of cell or tissue, to treath many diseases such as
Opponents fear this process could be used to make cloned babies.
The process to to make the cells involved placing human skin cells inside hollowed eggs, and then using chemicals to start cell division. This created an embryo. After five or six days of division, the embryonic stem cells were harvested, which destroyed the embryos.
Other researchers have not yet repeated this process to be sure that the original cells were cloned.
The team was lead by Woo Suk Hwang at Seoul National University. It started with 242 eggs donated by 16 women. They created 20 cloned embryos and one stem-cell line.
The South Korean team came up with less harmful ways to hollow the eggs, and used fresh donor eggs.
