How To Restore Kitchen Cabinets
Question: House built in 1958 and real wood kitchen cabinets, probably pine, not compressed sawdust. There was originally a varnish like stain. A product called One-Step was used, it is like a paint, and then a stain is used on top. What kind of stripper should be used, I'd like to avoid a lot of sanding of the cabinets, but I'd like an environmentally friendly stripper. Also what kind of stain should I use?
Answer: There will be an even better stripper on the market in 6 months. For now you can use Citrus Strip. There will be a new one in the fall of 2004 that will even strip paint off airplanes, and can be used indoors. Citrus strip will have to sit on for about an hour, and you can use a little piece of scrap glass to scrape. Use a good oil based stain, and then two coats of polyurethane.
