Gnosis , being an intense state of no-mind, or one-pointedness, involves seeking out an altered state of brain consciousness. It is believed that over time a transformation of psychological structures can be achieved. Gnosis can be achieved in many ways that temporarily alter the brain's chemistry:
- sex
- drugs
- Hyperventilation (taking in too much oxygen)
- Confronting a fear (panic attack induced by snakes, heights, etc)
- Strong emotions such as love, hate, rage, confusion, etc.
- Meditation (to vacuity or other state)
- Labyrinth meditation
- Samhain ancestor meditation
- Nature meditation on amergin
- Pain
- Spinning (dizziness/confusion, whirling dervishes)
- Staring into a strobelight (using visual system to stimulate rhythmic electronic pulses in the brain, may activate epileptic seizures in some people)
- Running to complete physical exhaustion (endorphin rush)
- Holding it as long as you possibly can before going to the bathroom
- Adrenaline rush (bungee jumping, parachuting, holding up a 7-11, etc)
- Drumming (using audio sensory system to stimulate rhythmic electrical pulses in the brain)
- Chanting
- Mantras
- Singing
- Listening to music Really Really Really loudly (especially ambient music. This is done in the Bodyworks exhibit to achieve a surreal atmosphere.)
- Creating artwork (Automatic Expression and gnosis )
- Video games ([Sigils])
- Holding your breath (either with or without air in your lungs)
- Hunger and/or thirst (fasting)
- Sensory overload (For example, pain, sex, fear, hyperventilation, loud music, and strobe light all at once)
- chakra piercing (practiced in some Australian rituals)
- Sensory deprivation
- Listening to white noise until it's no longer white noise
- Sitting on a powerpoint (most graveyards, incidentally, are powerpoints)
- Blood rush to head (standing on your head or hanging from your feet)
- Shamanic body postures (see the works of Belinda Gore and Felicitas Goodman)
- Killing something (rituals of the hunt, rituals of manhood)
- Sacrificing something you value
- Rollercoasters (works best if you keep your eyes shut)
- Spinning on an office chair, with eyes closed, while bobbing head up and down (used as training for weightlessness by Soviet cosmonauts)
- Gazing (crystal balls, pools, mirrors, a random spot on the wall)
- Sleep deprivation (aim for five days or more for best results)
- Lucid Dreaming (ability to know you are in a dream state, and control the dream state without coming out of the dream)
- Martial Arts (if you're willing to make a ten year investment)
- Jumping through a bonfire
- Dancing
- Lighting yourself on fire
- Mosh Pits (actually just a combination of Loid Noise, Dancing, and Pain)
