U.S. hospital researchers studied 49 patients to discover 28 patients with germs in their dental plaque that are known to cause respiratory disease. While the researchers watched, 14 of the patients developed pneumonia. Researchers used sophisticated DNA matching techniques to show that plaque germs in eight of the patients had DNA that matched the germs from their lungs.
"This is the first study to establish unequivocally a link between dental hygiene and respiratory infection," said Dr. Ali El-Solh of the University at Buffalo in New York.
According to a monologue by commedian George Carlin, "Dad you've got bad breath. You should take listine to kill germs.... What do germs have to do with bad breath?.... Silly, germs have bad breath!" George Carlin's comments predated the hospital study by at least 20 years.
