Michigan City council voted in May to allow the broadcast of the Islamic call to prayer, the 5 times a day. The call to prayer, has been broadcast at the Al-Islah Islamic Center since May 28
In July 2004, it comes up for vote among the residents of the town.
Resident John Rush, 40, promised "I'm going to oppose it. I don't like it. I think it's imposing religion on everybody."
Mr. Musad, described his attraction to moving to this town, saying "What attracted me was seeing school girls with veils and burkhas," he said. "It's more authentic here than in New York, more roots. There's village life."
Joanne Golen, 68, self-described born again Christian, said "My main objection is simple," she said. "I don't want to be told that Allah is the true and only God five times a day, 365 days a year. It's against my constitutional rights to have to listen to another religion evangelize in my ear."
Chuck Schultz, 49 year old computer programmer, said "Everyone talks about their rights," Mr. Schultz said. "The rights of Christians have been stripped from them. Last week there were Muslims praying downstairs, in a public building. If Christians tried to do that, the A.C.L.U. would shut us down."
However, in a clear attempt to ignore the will of the majority of voters, the city is promising that regardless of how the residents vote on this issue, the call to prayer will continue to be broadcast from the Al-Islah mosque.
