Google's Affordable Mini Search ApplianceMarch 2006 - Google has released a new affordable version of it's Search Appliance. It is designed for SME, and is called Google Mini. Google says it can be setup in under an hour.
It can handle over 220 document types, and starts with a 50,000 document capacity, and can scale to 300,000 document capacity. Pricing is just under $2000 for the 50,000 document model, and goes up to $9000 for the 300,000 document capacity solution. Support is included for one year, and additional years of support cost $1000. (The Google Search Appliance allows up to 15 million documents to be indexed, database indexing, and continuous crawling, and starts at $30,000 for searching up to 500,000 documents.)
The question to be answered is, how well does this compare to solutions like dtSearch? dtSearch is a $1000 solution to the issue of indexing content. However it is not a deployable box, and in initial tests, the spider that they supply to gather documents can get easily confused, and seems to need a lot of custom configuration when dealing with very large document sets. However, it has no limitations on the number of documents it can handle.
One significant limitation of the Google appliance is that it is only intended for indexing your own content. According to their FAQ:
A software solution like dtSearch does not have this limitation.
