Garnet 's editorial written after researching someone's claim that people are living only on air and sunlight, Breatharians ...
An article on inedia noted: Fasting has long been considered a way to purify one’s body and mind. Fasting reminds us of our dependence and weakness, and links us to those who suffer hunger as part of their daily lives. Inediates strive to be spiritual beings and carry fasting to an inhuman level. If restraint, self-control, and reducing one’s intake of food and water are good, then eliminating all physical nourishment must be better. Spiritual beings don’t need food, water, or sleep. Maybe so, but food, water and sleep are not optional for human beings.
This is clearly connected with the Greek idea of dualism that the body and soul are separate, that the soul is good, but the body is bad, and that any kind of body or material pleasure is evil, and especially that the body should be tortured with various discomforts to free up the soul. Unfortunately this idea has infected and majorly screwed up many Christian religions since the first century, and fundamentally denies the goodness of what God originally created. This flies in the face of God’s proclamation after creation:
And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. (Genesis 1:31)
Every other time God looked at his handwork each day and claimed “it was good”, but in this case at the end He could truly say “It was very good”… By proclaiming it as good, How showed us that He took pleasure in His creation… When we are condemning parts of God’s creation, we should be careful and meditate on what it meant for his creation, which included us, to be very good... We might look at the autumn and say what a waste it is for trees to shed their beautiful green leaves, look at all those decomposing red leaves, and yet there are creatures and other new life that springs up from the bed of nutrients that “litter” of leaves represents to us… Who are we to question the “waste” of a creation that preceded us?
Some of the saddest people I know are the people who think they’ve done away with sleep, or the need to eat vegetables, or the need for clean air, or various other reasonable needs of the body… To the ancient Greeks it was a mystery of how God could design his character into the fabric of the world and how we are made. As we saw above, one of the attributes of God is taking pleasure. With modern science, we've learned that pleasure is fundamentally wired into every higher animal's nervous system. Biologists have long ago discovered pleasure centers in the brain, and how to activate them with small electrical stimuli. Unknown to the Greeks who frowned on any kind of physical pleasure, (resulting in ascetism and monasteries and self flagellation), we now understand that pleasure centers are fundamental to enabling our survival. In the last 100 years scientists have traced the exact pathways in the brain, the exact chemistry wired into us that connects to the pleasure centers when we are doing the things we need to do to survive as individuals and as species.
For example, did you know that cats actually have their hunting behavior wired into their pleasure centers, so that when a cat does what it is supposed to, which is to hunt and especially chase things, it activates its pleasure center, and the cat feels pleasure every bit as much as we might feel from something we really like? I not only know this from studying everything I can about genetics and how brains are wired, I know it from first hand experience. My Monkey cat gets really excited and high when we play fetch, or I bring a moth into the house for her to chase, and she is so happy that she vocalizes her excitement and pleasure. I’ve found these ways to help her connect with her innate wiring and naturally enjoy what it means to be a cat…
Even the crab in my aquarium appears to get excited when he discovers a piece of food I’ve dropped next to him. Is it possible even in his primitive nervous system that eating is not just getting rid of a feeling of hungry discomfort, but that it actually produces something akin to satisfaction or pleasure…
We can do well to follow these example, to find for ourselves healthy pleasures with no drawbacks... One could say that learning our true balanced place in the universe is the best path to becoming happy… God has wonderful things in store for our futures, but He also gave us a life to live now that has pleasures that are part of what we are to be enjoying in preparation for the greater pleasures to come… Meditate on the perfect creation, accept God as your personal Creator, then ask how you can honor Him by helping to glorify His creation.………
NOTE: Extensive studies into extended fasting show that whether fasting is done for reasons of lack of food, or because of a spiritual emphasis, the body's physiological reaction is the same: It begins to suffer from malnutrition and the complications thereof.
